thinking of getting a 60's or 70's volkswagon bus

my band and i need something to transport gear in from show to show, and something that can handle touring this summer, so we're thinking about getting an old school volkswagon bus :tongue:

have any of you guys ever owned one?  recommend a particular year or engine?  how did you like it?

i hear its getting quite difficult to find parts these days.. hopefully we will be able to find one that is in good condition and not too expensive.

Unless you or one of your friends knows how to work on VWs', don't do it. These vehicles are a pain in the ass to repair and expensive as fuck. Do yourself a favor, save some hassle for your band and get a newer, more reliable means of transportation. It may not look as cool but your chances of being late to a gig because of "car problems" drops significantly.

got  72 camper with a 1700 super beatle motor in it, great bus but like stated before if you cant work on it dont buy it.. Just the other night leaving work at 3 am in a thunder storm windshield wipers die.  its 40 years old shit just breaks.  I crawled under the dash and hit the wiper motor with a hammer, started working again..Shit like that happens every day.

Now a word of advice from a fellow player who has toured, get a transport van from a air port hotel or whatever. craigs list short bus theres plenty of good deal low mile vans out there that could move your eqipment. the vw bus has like 40 horsepower. And you can build the inside to suit your needs... peace man good luck

Isn't summer over? Just saying.

Stay away from VW if you are on a budget. It would be really cool to have and tour in until a day in when it breaks down. VW's are back assward to work on yourself and expensive.

i wouldnt exactly say expensive... its the cheapest car i have ever worked on...
