Peavy -> White Sox Deal Done, Pending Jake's Approval
    #10375321 -

So this is being talked about in all the Chicago media this morning.

They just interviewed a White Sox pitcher who confirmed that Kenny Williams had him call Peavy last night to fill Peavy in on the details of the team and how it is to play for Ozzie.  He said the deal is supposedly done, just waiting for PEavy to decide if he would waive his no-trade clause to come to the White Sox.

What a weak deal. Peavy should be a Cub, if not for this stupid ownership situation.

Agreed. And he'd be nuts to do it. He's in the catbird seat, why go to the White Sox when you can have better??

Yeah, this morning I would've said this was a done deal.

But now I'm not so sure.  You're absolutely right, why would he do it?  They have to trade him and a better situation wouldn't be hard to visualize.

Agreed. Why would he go there? To win  To hang out on the southside?

There's not a team in baseball that wouldn't want Peavy. He's got to know that.

Yeah, certainly not to win.

The White Sox are really, really, really bad.

I'm not being at all hyperbolic I say they're historically bad.

20-2 loss to the Twinkies today, one of the worst margins of defeat in team history.

I'm sure Jake is watching that in California and thinking, "Yeah, put me on the mound and that's a championship team."

That said, I think Kenny Williams is one of the best GMs in baseball and you can count on him to field a contender if Reinsdorf gives him any kind of resources at all.  And it's not like there is a real monster in that division as there are in the AL East and West.

So...I don't know.  I don't think he'll do it. But the White Sox sounded real confident this morning and are going to have a ton of pissed-off fans on their laps if they fuck this up as they have their last four or five big free-agent signings.

Quote:
Agent Barry Axelrod told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that Peavy had a "strong preference" to stay in the National League. That preference, along with Peavy's fondness for his new home in Southern California, apparently spelled the end of the deal.

"We aren't hiding anything from anybody. Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League. He has a comfort zone there, he's been successful, and he's won a Cy Young Award. I don't know that on May 21, that preference has eroded very much. From our point of view we may say, 'Let's give [the Padres] more time and see if a National League team might step up over the next six weeks.'

"If this were any one of three or four other teams and they called about him, Jake would jump at it. He would be willing. They know who they are. They know that certain places are more enticing to him."

GTF on the phone, Jim.

That's fine, as long as it's to the Cubs.
