Financial incentive is only one reason people create.

One reason yes. Let's take a video game for example though. The high quality ones can take 40 or more people using state of the art tech to create. Now, do you think these people will have the money or the incentive to band together and create something awesome for zero reward other then artistic gratification? I hardly think so.

I'm not disagreeing with you on rewarding individuals/groups/organizations for their hard work.

I just don't see innovation as simply a capitalistic endeavor.

People would have more access to information.
This would have a ton of beneficial consequences.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I wasn't aware that a copyright in any way limited the amount of information that a person can get

The abolition of copyright laws, in my opinion, would lead to a decrease in the number of people in the arts business because many of them depend on the copyrights to make a living, i.e. it's their job.

If there's no copyrights, they cannot create art (be it music, games, wahtever) for a living and will have to find another job to meet their financial needs, which would take away time to be creative.

Also, OP are you talking about copyrights or patents. Because people are getting into inventions which are patents

I liked Trent Reznor's approach best.

Copyrights are a huge hindrance in a variety of ways.
From the textbooks you educate from, to the access of information one can receive due to having the means to pay for said copyright.

It is no disrespect to any artists or creators, but I don't believe for a second that the only reason people create is more monetary gain. That is merely a bi-product of their innovation. I make music for the sake of making music. I build for the sake of building (sometimes as a solution, or to fulfill a purpose).

But without the greed incentive I believe that arts would become more refined. People wouldn't be doing things just to get rich, such as how I see the hip-hop industry, and most music, has transformed into. Instead people would be creating for the sake of expression. The creation of arts would be from the soul, just for the sake of sharing to others.
This is just how I see it anyways.

Who the fuck cares? It's fun.

People will still make their art freely available if they want to and many do.

That's bullshit. This whole arts industry will be hardly affected. The focus will shift and the stuff that is being made will change but that's just going to be for the better.

I'm talking about both.

Can you give some examples of people in the arts business who depend on copyrights to make a living??

How about anyone employed by Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft to make ANY product that they make. They all depend on the copyright to make a living.

Getting rid of copyright laws doesn't mean we will no longer need operating systems or computer games. I think it will just change the way in which these are made.

They WILL NOT be made by a major corporation though, therefore we will have 2D games.
