Copyright laws
    #10342051 -

What would happen if all copyright laws were abolished? No more intellectual property. What do you think?

Everything would be free!

It wouldn't stop people from progressing and producing.  Just look at all the open source software there is.  People code that stuff for fun and release it out of kindness and expression as opposed to making money.

Music would be made for enjoyment not cash.  Seems like a good idea - we'd go back to how it used to be before everything was commercialized.

Intellectual property affects a lot more than just software and music.

For a lot of people their jobs depend on being able to turn a profit off of intellectual property and innovation.  These people would be out of work.

A lot of the great games we enjoy wouldn't be produced.

A bunch of people would indeed lose their jobs. But I
think the pros outweigh the cons. I think it would be a
blessing for human development. We will no longer be held
back by pointless patents held by people who did not
invent anything.

I've spent (literally) several months and up to a year or so producing book chapters and texts.  I would prefer the protection of a copyright, rather than know someone could hit "copy & paste" and present the work as their own.

Perhaps we can gradually limit copyright. I agree that immediate abolishing of copyright laws might be kinda harsh.

The "con" is that nobody would produce/invent anything because they would not be paid for their efforts when their production/invention can be freely copied by anybody.

What are the pros?

Do you think anyone would bother to make a game like Fallout 3 if they couldn't turn a profit? Stuff like that takes dedication and a large team, it isn't something joe blow is going to turn out to put smiles on peoples faces.

I don't believe that. I think that without copyright laws people would still create. Before the invention of copyright laws people were inventing all sorts of things. I don't think copyright laws have had any positive or negative effect on this situation.

A pro of abolishing copyright laws is that you can freely use an invention and use it for your own purposes.

I disagree.  I have a shit load of stuff people have spent years of hard work developing for free.

Linux  - theres your free operating system, urban terror - awesome free online 1st person shooter.  Music and artwork from my friends.

You only copyright something if you want to sell it.  I don't disagree with copyright but I certainly disagree that peoples sole motivation for producing/inventing is money.  Mankind has been inventing, creating and sharing for free for thousands of years and we still do today.

Kamek, BTW copyright is different from a patent.  Patents cover inventions, copyright covers creativity like writing, recordings etc (I think thats correct).

We are constantly building technology to take mans place.  We are building technology that builds technology!  Before long man won't invent the next generation of computer - the computer itself will.  The evolution of technology in its own hands will excel to infinity far excelling the evolution of humans.

It takes an investment of between $200 and $2,000 million to bring a new drug to the market.

Now I think we can all agree that the great majority of pharmaceutical companies have all the ethical standards of Hitler, and that the copyright laws in this area are in desperate need of reform, putting an end to all copyright altogether would be a bit retarded.

"A fascinating thing about the Waorani tribe of northern Ecuador was that 54% of their mortality was due to spearing each other. In fact only two deaths in eight generations were from natural causes. When we pressured them on this they admitted that one of those guys had gotten so old that he was about to die of old age, so they speared him anyway."

This is exactly why I think the current copyright laws are crazy.  A drug company spends all of this money and the new drug is protected by a PATENT.  The life of a patent is typically around 17 years.  After that, all of the hard work by the drug company goes into the public domain.  This is why we have generic drugs.

On the other hand, a COPYRIGHT extends from the life of the author plus 70 years.  This results in a typical copyright life of around 140 years.

So, Mickey Mouse is given far more protection than a blockbuster miracle drug that took billions to develop.

The constitution says that congress should make laws "To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;"

I challenge anyone here to show me how a Brittney Spears album is useful art.:smirk:
