Is it normal to only have three wisdom teeth?
    #10285488 -

My two right wisdom teeth are pretty much completely mature, my bottom left one is still growing, and my upper left one is completely nonexistent - there's no sign that anything is going to grow in that area.

Well, is it normal? :crazy2:
Which wisdom teeth do you have?
You may choose many

Your poll doesn't make sense. How are you ever going to know how many teeth each has? What if someone votes for them all.

Anyway I have them all and actually like them. They seem to do a good job as back up molars especially because I lost a couple of teeth in a really bad car wreck. My dentist said I'll eventually have to have them taken out but that hasn't been the case yet. Hopefully never.

If someone votes for them all, then that means that they have 32 teeth.

That sucks that you lost your teeth in a car accident, must've been pretty fucked up...

I never really understood why it would be necessary, or beneficial to remove one's wisdom teeth; isn't it natural to have them?

Wisdom teeth can push your other teeth inward and cause trouble.

My teeth turned out fine as my orthodontist and dentist did a wonderful job at working with what was left. The only flaw, which is major, is that I'm missing a front tooth and need to buy a wicked expensive implant. It sucks and I don't grin in photos because of it. And I bet people think I'm a hick when I tell them I'm from Ohio and drive a Ford.

How did people in the old days deal with wisdom teeth? I sure as hell wouldn't want some archaic dentist rummaging around my mouth with a bronze pick and hammer...:muppet:

Wisdom Teeth are an evolutionary second chance. When we were running around in the plains of africa and even until industrial times and focus on good hygiene the wisdom teeth were a god sent. Imagine the bad tooth hygiene that was rampant in everyone, you rotted out some molars and they fell out, then when you're in your 20s, you get a new set of chompers.

Unfortunately or fortunately evolution hasn't caught up entirely with our new hygiene habits and we still have most of all our teeth when the widsom teeth are ready to come in. However even in this short period of time variants have become more common. The variants have always existed, 3 wisdom teeth, no wisdom teeth etc.. but since technology has become more accessable the variants that show reduced numbers of the wisdom teeth or complete agenesis or atresia (lack of formation or formation and then generation) are probably picked up more that's all. I doubt significant selection occurs to select for or against wisdom teeth now adays unless you're not able to access dental care.

But the answer is yes, having "non-standard wisdom teeth" development is still 'normal' so to speak.
