considering a mini bucket... advice much apreciated.
    #10237658 -

I've been looking around all night for all the info i can find on bucket grows (like ottos) http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6696796/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1

but all i can find is basic info.

from what i've gathered you just get some kinda bucket, then put in some sub and mix with some kinda spawn.

are you supposed to put some verm on the bottom like casing?
or some on top for casing?
and from what i can see some people have holes in their buckets, some with micropore tape, some with pollyfill or w.e its called.

so is there any detailed tek out for this yet?

also would coir/coffee grounds work as a sub. in these?

the holes will provide gas exchange and help stop the sub suffocating, youll want to use a light sub material IMO, straw/hpoo with some coir would be good. id go with a casing layer on top on that project, would still work w/o.

Ive been trying out the bucket method for a bit now and your right all you will find is basic info.  Just treat the thing like a big casing, do your research to find the best casing method that work for you.  Coir and coffee grounds works excellent and i will sometimes add some worm casting for some extra nutrients, hoping to add some chicken shit to the mix here soon.  I wouldnt worry about the holes just do what you think will work best i been using two holes at substrate level and 4 at the top all covered with micropore tape.  I would say the verm on the bottom doesn't do much for you i would just put on a 50/50 mix on top(verm would work too) after the bulk substrate has fully colonized. good luck these things kick ass and are really simple if you know how to maintain casings.

I picked up a bucket and some shower caps... lol
now just gotta wait for the cakes to colonize to spawn to the coir mix im gonna make.

whats a good height for the bottom holes/sub.?
i think i herd 4" somewhere...

I plan on trying the mono-bucket soon too, just for fun. A bucket o' fungus sounds fun.  In the thread that you linked to, _OttO_ used 3" of sub, and his bucket was ~1' tall.  And he used a thin casing layer. His results were amazing, so 3-4" seems good.
Good luck!

K Check it out; WHat you do is line the inside with a trash bag and tape it up in several places, then LAYER your sub like this; (No verm on the bottom) shred your cakes witha cheese grader, Then put about an inch of spawn(the shreded cake(s)on the bottom, just enough to where you can't see any of the bag; then put your substrate, then more spawn; (repeat until its 4 inches deep, always finish with substrate on top, (or casing layer) (don't leave cakes exposed) ...buckets are basically round monotubs... make holes like this...

Stuff polyfil; etc. etc... You'll figure it out! :goodluck:

I see you got everything in order, in terms on what you need to do. You should go check out a thread i just posted about making a fc out of the huge ozarka water jug. I wonder if you could make some good bulk grow inside of 1.

FellowGrower:

Where did you get those buckets?

Can you use those buckets for multiple grows? Sometimes myc eats paper and they look paper-ish.

They are icecream tubs, (like from icecream shops)

And well, this is the first time I'm using em' so, I hesitate to tell ya'll to use them b/c IDK whats gonna happen with em; All I know is Ive invested alot of time in making 5 r 6 of em so; time will tell: But, I'm pretty confident it will work (or I wouldn't have spent all that effort in prepin em)

If I'm successful (which I WILL BE):smirk: I plan on writing up an "IceCream Dream TEK" that will go over all the specs and details... but I lined to bottom with a trash bag; so, the myc isn't gonna eat thru the wax paper! (hopefully not) if you look at that pic, you can see the bag taped to the sides:tongue:

Also; that's kinda what makes these tubs so great; is, they are waterproof and sturdy, but you can cut holes in it easily with out a drill! & they're FREE!

I've done a few things like this and they work.  Just treat them as a monotub and proceed as normal.  I find regular old monotubs easier to work with though.

Any specific reasoning to this?  Is it the size/shape/etc. that's easier to work with?

It's the size & shape.  I used a 5 gallon bucket once and a few small bucket type things and they were a pain to work with.
