Indoor Lophophora Growing Questions.
    #10187168 -

Hi all,

I have just recieved a nice lophophora williiamsi grafted onto a Thric.  Button approx 5cm.

I have a few questions regarding Lophophoras growing indoors.

I already have a 1000w HPS Son T setup for other medicinal plants.

I would like to place my lovely little lophophora in there, but im a little unsure of light cycle/nutrient requirements etc..

My lights are usually on 24/7..
Will this light cycle be ok for my lophophora??

What about a 12/12 light cycle, should i remove my lophophora when the lights are switched to this cycle??

I am assuming that i should be able to get faster growth indoors, or atleast keep it growing through the winter months, is this correct?
Im near Sydney Aus.

What about nutrient requirments, has anybody used A+B Nutrients with Lophophoras?
What PPM strenght do they prefer??

Thanks for the help, it is very much appreciated..

Cheers

Really, just set them outdoor during the warm months. I've found that 6-7 hours of direct sunlight is fine. No etiolation and no sunburn.

During the winter, just give them as much window light as possible, but don't set them too close to the window. Windows radiate cold air. You won't have any problems with this method. It works just fine.

I use Schultz Cacti Plus nutes. I find that is sufficient although additives don't hurt. I always used distilled water with cacti. No salts and its pH neutral.

They won't grow any faster because they are indoor. They will grow faster than in the wild because we can control the nutes and variables.

cheers for the advice..

So they wont grow any faster under 1000w, during winter??
Is this correct?

The lights will be on anyway, so it will not be an extra cost to consider
so i thought i could throw them in over winter (or even full-time)to speed up growth a little.
would growth actually be slower under 1000w??
Sorry if my questions are a little naive, as i havent had much experience with cacti.

they will grow faster under lights, without a winter rest period.
but they don't require a full sun position so you can get away with putting them in a sunny window overwinter.
24/7 lighting is bad for cacti, unlike other plants they require a dark period to complete their cycle of photosynthesis.
the :sun: beats a 1000w hps hands down :yesnod:

Thanks ..
So for optimal growth it would be best to leave them outside and only put them inside under lights over winter??

Would a 12/12 light cycle be sufficient for it?
Would this induce flowering?
Most plants will slow or stop growing when in flower or fruit, is this also the case with Cacti??

Thanks again for everybodys help...

I have heard that growing them with a light without dormancy does increase the rate of growth. However, I've also read that allowing them to do what nature intended gives them a growth spurt in the Spring. That makes the light thing negligible. I haven't tried this out myself so I can't say. Just seems like a lot of fuss to me. I have better uses for my light .

1000w, be careful putting it in there at first, might burn it.  i'd put it under your taller plants for shade, or on the side where the light is less intense, at least at first.

12/12 is fine so long as the light is decent, which yours is.  like uare said, 24/7 aint great.  there are ways of doing it, but not worth the hassle.
