Playing guitar...

is fucking hard.

My biggest qualms thus far:

Switching from one chord to another, my fingers get all retarded and I lose track of where they are.

Barring is impossible.

Some chords are just not meant to happen, spanning over 4 frets at once just isn't happening.

I'm starting to think I'm not cut out for this, my fingers just can't extend the way these songs want me to.

I'm just venting I guess.

Ive been through that man. I thought the same thing. It requires work in the beginning. Lots of technique. The guitar is something that you can play for years and never master. If you dont practice enough that is.

Ive gone on and off from playing guitar (currently in On mode), and can play Stairway to heaven, over the hills and far away, working on a Elliot smith song, and some others. Been playing a year and a half. Just hang in there and practice:goodluck:

I guess..

been stuck to this thing 5+ hours a day for the last 2 weeks,

made significant progress,

I hope I can learn some Led Zeppelin songs pretty soon, Heartbreaker would be fun to play.

After finally starting to "play" guitar I know how truly great professional musicians are, I now watch Jimmy Page and Hendrix and those fuckers make it look so easy!

there's just a beginning hump you have to get over. keep playing your chords, dont give up on bar's, and after you do that, just play songs and have fun.

try not to thinka bout it as work, and try making your own music. you don't need to know scales and licks and all that stuff, just stick some chords together think of a cool melody and sing your heart away.

I've been playin guitar/mandolin for over 10 years.  Just keep doing it.  The learning curve is slow at first, but once you have the FUNDAMENTALS down you can go anywhere.

Just be sure to learn proper form on everything, it exists for a reason :thumbup:

I'm having a blast just fucking around with the strings when my fingers are tired, making some pretty psychedelic shit lol. And like a scrub, I got Smoke on the Water down pretty good :smile:

I think I'm having trouble because I'm not taking lessons or anything and don't have the money to and don't really want to, so my practice regime probably isn't that great. I just try and play the intro's to various songs, and I doubt I'm gonna get any better and playing the first 30 seconds of Sunshine of your Love :smile:

What do you recommend that I practice? What should I focus on to improve? What fundamentals?

Hope you don't mind my asking :smile:

I hear ya. I bought my first guitar a week ago. It's a lot of fun...but so frustrating at the same time.

It gets easier, way easier.

But their is always room for improvement, no matter how good you get, their is something you can improve on.

If your goal is to play zeppling songs, and other mainstream music, then a year from now you will be able to play them. Most likely not alot of solo's, but basic rythm is the majority of the songs, and it is really easy to learn.

Sometimes if you practice too much, it will make you learn slower. Take 1/2 hour everyday or every second day to practice on technique, and then spend as much time just fooling around and getting a good feel for the guitar.

Don't give up, you will regret it.


Best advice

Guitar is all about "not thinking" about what you know. Once you learn chords,songs, and scales, it'l all about just listening and not even thinking about where your fingers go. Your hands will stretch and develop muscle in time, just keep at it and you'll be shredding in no time.:thumbup:

Glad I'm not alone :smile:

I had one before but I absolutely sucked and couldn't even get basic things down, I think the guitar was just a piece of shit. I got this new Squire and I like it a lot more.

Buy a scale book and a metranome.  Learn the scales, play them ove rand over and over and over, forwards and backwards, super fast, and then super slow.  Start by learning all the major scales, then the minors, then you can get funky if you want with blues scales and other cool things.

Then start mixing the scales up (notes will represent successive notes in a scale):  1,2,3,4 -- 2,3,4,5 -- 3,4,5,6 -- 4,5,6,7 -- 5,6,7,8 -- 8,7,6,5 -- 7,6,5,4 -- etc.etc...

Then go smaller:  1,2,3 - 2,3,4 - 3,4,5 - etc..
Then change it up more:  1,4,2,3 - 2,5,3,4 - 3,6,4,5 etc.etc.


Complement your scale practice with chords.  Learn a new one every day, and practice them all during your warmups.  Try running through them quickly & in as many ways as possible so your fingers get used to "just going where they're supposed to".

Once you have the fundamentals down, playing songs you like will be easy-cheesy. 




But you will NEVER get good if you don't CONTINUALLY practice as often as you can.  Persistance is key to learning any skill - so keep your efforts up.  I have confidence in ya'.

Boring as hell. But works great to improve the flexibility and strength in your fingers.



Try this for a couple of weeks every day and you will see great improvement!!

ive been on and off guitar a lot, but have been playing a lot lately. i find a lot of it is muscle memory, at least it is for me. once i remember how the song goes and practice it first at a slow but steady speed the speed and accuracy naturally comes. don't lose hope it's certainly not easy and will take some time but it's well worth it. if you get frustrated just take a break. sometimes i get frustrated with a song and take a break only to find when i come back i can play the song smoothly. guitar lessons do help because you can watch firsthand some really helpful techniques. good luck and have fun with it

play with friends that are good - that's what I do - and they throw me some scraps and I get to jam with them. Watching others play and havin them walk you through stuff will help you learn really fast rather than on your own. It's all just practice man just keep doing it :thumbup:

i think in order to play well you have to have an ear for music. i pick up on stuff quickly because i listen to a lot of the music i want to end up playing so i'd suggest maybe start there? maybe go to a nearby community college they have cheap group lessons :thumbup:
