This is why some places charge you. It should be free IF you get the work done there.

i didnt get the work done there tough, I just got it looked at to see if anything was wrong.  Once I get the check from the girls insurance I will sure take it back there to get worked on, but they don't know that.  They are just giving the good hospitality that used to exist in most local business

they tell you the problem and you go fix it costing them the time
tracking down your problem, best thing to do is take it in, say
'fix the problem' and it'll probably only cost the hundred bucks


Also some places will drop the estimate fee if you get it fixed there

exactly, not to mention they usually have to take things apart to actually find the problem. It's not like construction where you just crunch numbers.

What makes you think they are any different than the Mexicans working at the dealer shop. You live in the Long Beach area, right? They often work at the dealers too. Unless you have some freak part that is very specific to your problem, they can download the instructions and order the same OEM spec parts the dealer gets within the same time frame. You don't have to go to a Mexican run shop BTW. But don't assume they are inferior in any way.

I advise you to go to a forum for your type of car and search for the same problem and see what people say. Just in case there is some useful advice or even DIY instructions for replacing the part. I'm no grease monkey, but about 1/4 bolt on car part repairs aren't all that hard. I know people on this site can follow harder instructions! I see them make logs about it all the time. If anything, it is usually expensive repair tools that get in the way of DIY repairs. Personally, I have saved money by ordering the cheaper measuring tools and the parts and taking it to an independent mechanic for the repair.

As for estimates: AC can warrant some labor time for diagnostics. You can maybe find out yourself if your AC unit is bad and needs total replacement (which requires some research in a Toyota forum), and just request the replacement without diagnostics (which will hurt your wallet). Otherwise, since mechanics in CA have some politics with diagnostics to avoid unnecessary freon charging, they tend to spend some time poking around and have the right to charge for an estimate. The same goes ($x10) for tranny problems. Otherwise, estimates should generally be free. This often goes for anything with a check engine light leading to a failure code. If your AC just doesn't make cold air however, I would expect to pay for the estimate.

BTW man, don't huff the freon from your car. Please.

wut about the freon from the air conditioning units outisde my skool? is that freon no good too?
