are car repair estimations always supposed to cost money
    #10106014 -

my stero got jacked and so my AC doesnt work
im thinking its just 1 wire that got pulled and repairing it should take like 10 minutes tops
so i bring my car in and ask for an estimation on how much that 1 wire is gonna cost to replace
and he said it costs $95 an hour just so the mechanic can tell me how much it costs
a hundred bux just for a number
thats so absurd wtf

The mechanics know its an easy fix they just wanna milk you for all its worth. What kind of car is it? You're probably spot on about the problem. It could also be a disconnected vacuum tube. I would suggest just getting a manual for your car from autozone and fix it yourself.

sounds like he knows you're a rich spoiled tool, so he is going to take your money if you'll give it to him.  It's your parents money anyways, why do you care?

QFT.

You probably walked in there draped head to toe in kandy, and he figured he'd rip off the spoiled little college druggie with the ambiguous sexual orientation.

Estimations should be free for something so trivial and the repair shouldn't cost more then 70 unless a big part needs to be replaced.

Seriously dude, find a different mechanic.

You can even mention to the new mechanic that the old guy was trying to buttrape you on just looking at the car, to head the new guy off at the pass if he tries to pull the same thing.

Or, just bust out the phone book.  Make some phone calls asking if they charge a fee just to look at the car.

Correct ,most estimates are free...even giant ones involving home construction that take hours to do.

Shure you werent still in a K-hole and he said 95 dollars to fix it.......
I would go to a different shop.
Its usually best to call around first.....good luck.

actually they are quite common, mechanics got tired of people
coming in looking fro free repair advice, you bring the car in,
they tell you the problem and you go fix it costing them the time
tracking down your problem, best thing to do is take it in, say
'fix the problem' and it'll probably only cost the hundred bucks

was the radio aftermarket? was it custom?
find a new mechanic
some vehicles HVAC systems are controlled/powered through the headunit, ive read on crutch field the some cars AC will stop working with an incompatible headunit.

This is why some places charge you. It should be free IF you get the work done there.

I blew apart the tranny on my offroad jeep and brought it to some shabby ass repair shop where everyone was a dick and I still got a free estimate.
