That post reminded me of reasons to call the US fascist other than what is being discussed here and had a fairly open definition of fascism.

However to those of you who say the government that does nothing while it's economy nosedives is wise. I contend that just because the democrats US government isn't doing the right things doesn't mean that intervention to prevent problems itself is unwise.

Sweet mother fucking Zappa.  The fucking idiots fire Waggoner and take over the company.  They assemble the group to run the company.  The group:
Quote:
A large part of the [WSJ] article is given over to a discussion of the absence of industry expertise among the members of the auto industry team.

In session after session in a warren of offices at the Treasury Department, the team has sat through tutorials on dealer financing, studied basic data and debated the future of U.S. car sales. They have spent days trying to understand the complexities of the hundreds of companies that supply the car companies with axles, seats and other parts.

Steven Rattner, a former journalist-turned-investment banker, was picked last month to head the team…[he says] “[W]e’ve learned a lot about how car dealers work

O fucking greatzors, they're learning about the auto industry, kittens and puppies rejoice.

Quote:
Disquieting isn’t it. I can’t fault the members for trying to get their hands around the industry whose future they are deciding but I don’t understand why a few people with real industry expertise aren’t integral members of the panel. It’s one thing to get a crash course and quite another to apply the lessons in a cogent manner.

Don't be fooled by the website, this is the Wall Street Journal.

Quote:
The team’s industrial expertise comes from Ron Bloom, a scrappy Harvard Business School graduate who gave up investment banking in 1996 to work as a top adviser to the United Steelworkers union…

Several team members, such as Brian Deese, a 31-year-old former Obama campaign aide, are on loan from the White House’s National Economic Council. Three others specialize in climate change. The rest come from agencies such as the Energy and Labor departments. Backing them up are about 30 accountants and advisers.

Great. Just great. Thirty-one-year old. Specialists in climate change.

There’s more, if you’ve got the stomach for it:( Other guy's inserted commentary)

People on the Fiat team came away [from a meeting with the task force] thinking that the task force’s questions betrayed a limited understanding of the industry. “It’s fair to say we walked out of the meeting and were a little unsettled,” says one member of the Fiat team…

Several auto experts who’ve met with the panel say they’ve been struck by the group’s focus on trying to determine exactly when car sales will rebound. “They are absolutely concerned with the short-term, so it’s hard to see them grasping the medium or longer-term issues,” says Daniel Roos, an automotive expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who briefed the team in Washington on March 6.]

Interested parties should go check out this astounding bit of suicidal investing strategy.  These people are either mind numbingly stupid or want to ruin the country.  I am currently voting for stupid but that could change.

zappa, while I see your point, you seem fixated on quantity of experience while negating the quality of that experience.

These ousted executives no doubt have the basics down when compared to these guys on Obama's team. But they couldnt run their companies right when having the reins.

you leave management intact (or bring in management from another failed auto company), and then bring in the bailout concessions team to supervise or offer advice. You think the two could coexist?

and FIAT? Fix it again Tony? cmon, Fiats are shit and known as the worst auto company as far as quality and reliability are concerned article about FiatChrysler merger "What's more, parent company Fiat Group appears not to have enough money to pay debt that matures in the next 12 months, Standard & Poor's said Tuesday as it downgraded Fiat's ratings." sounds like sour italian wine from Fiat, imo.

lonestar, the railroads begged the government to take away their obligation to run inter-city passenger rail b/c none of them could turn a profit doing so, and it hurt their bottom line so much that even their freight services couldnt keep them in the black.

I highly doubt any private rail company could be profitable in the inter-city or inter-state passenger train business.

Amtrak actually isn't there to make money.  Never really was.

The only reason it exists anymore is to move lots and lots of troops in a big goddamn hurry, if we ever have to (Same reason we built the interstate highway system).  Kind of outdated, but hardly the worst idea in the world.

Yes, it did.  We aren't talking about emperors, but dictators with a strict 6 month term of service, appointed to deal with a particular crisis.  To even suggest you needed more time was to get executed.  It worked for the entire ~350 years of the Roman Republic in which it was used.

Wouldn't work now, though.  We'd never run out of crisis.
