How does your body adapt/adjust to... well, anything?
    #10072630 -

This is kinda hard to say exactly what I mean, hence the... uninformative title and my inability to search, but lemme try to explain.

What I'm wondering is, well, lets use marijuana as an example, but it applies to anything I suppose. Not just drugs, but you'll see what I'm getting at in a second.

When you first do things there are good and bad effects. I'm not going to call them side effects, because 'side effects' are just the same thing as 'bad effects' they're all effects, some just less desirable than others.

So, overtime our body adjusts to these and they tend to go away. I'm sure you guys can relate to this with marijuana highs. So my question is how much of the influence on decreasing the bad effects does our desire for those effects to lessen go away? Does it play any role, has there ever been any kind of studies that could show this either way?

Maybe they don't even go away and we just mentally tune them out and so forget about them, or perhaps, in the same vein, we change our perception of them and thus no longer think of them as undesirable.

What sparked this thought was I was looking up coffee's laxative properties, and I read that after awhile it goes away for people once they get used to it. It hasn't gone away for me, but I like it. That's got alot to do with the reason I drink coffee, so I was just wondering if the fact that I like that part of it keeps my body from adapting to it as quickly as someone who thinks of it negatively would. Just thought it would be interesting to know as I haven't really heard much on it otherwise. I know alot of these types of adaptions are just natural and unavoidable, but I was wondering what, if any, role what we want has to do with it.

I wonder the same thing.

I take 500mg of Adderall and get no side effects at all which is fucked when I think of it. I think my body just became used to it from my abuse of amphetamines.

Some people can take their adderall once a day but they still get nasty comedowns. People tend to focus on negative things like rapid heart beat which makes it seem worse then it really is.

When I eat fast food I have bad gas immediatly and don't feel well until it comes out, I've grown up on only healthy food, so maybe that's why so my body doesn't adapt well to gross foodingtons.

How the hell do you take 500mg of adderal and not kill yourself dude? I take 30 mg extended release for a long day of school and get such bad anxiety I can chain smoke like crazy!

See what I'm saying?

I take 500mg and I'm in fucking Heaven, you take 30mg and you get anxiety and probably other negative effects.

I think you get gassy and feel shitty is because you're eating shitty food. It's the same for people who only eat junk food, they can't eat healthy food.

This also may have something to do with what I was talking about, but you mentioning adderall made me think of it. This doesn't involve 'adapting' so much as... well.. changing, but the first 3-5 times I tripped on mushrooms they were completely different than they are now.

I didn't know how bad the anxiety can be, or well.. anything to expect from a trip. The worst anxiety I've had in my life had been on mushrooms, but because I hadn't experienced anything comparable up until then that (and this is just a theory) I had no comeup anxiety. I didn't know what to expect, but I also had no reason to be scared yunno.

In the same vein, I didn't know what I was going to get out of the trip, I mean I read plenty, but that doesn't mean much yunno. They were just literally... crazy, not in a psycho scary kinda way, but in a 'wow, wtf is this' kinda way. From then on though I built up my expectations, so I of course was always going to get to relatively the 'same place' every time I tripped. The first few times I could have been on pretty much any drug, they all felt so different and bizarre. They really didn't even have anything at all in common with my trips now. Though I definitely haven't increased my tolerance or lost the magic, it's totally my perspective that's changed I know.
