Cold Showers
    #10044947 -

Recently i started taking cold showers & they really feel great, especially afterwards when i get out, its like i get a rush of some sort, kinda like giddyness!

I now only use cold water, it wakes me up & makes all my muscles go nice & tight, i hyperventilated the first time but you eventually look forward to the rush

Rubbing almond oil all over your body before getting in is great too, it makes your skin super soft!

I used to take cold showers until a week ago, but I don't get much sleep so I need something soft to start the day.

Taking them when it's dark and cold isn't really enjoyable IMO, too. I like to take cold showers when the sun is here.

But I was always somewhat scared that a very cold temperature could somehow harm my body... is that stupid? Probably is.

Anyway, I still end the shower with cold water, but for a brief moment. Makes you feel aliiive.

cold showers rule.

the first one or two kinda suck but after you get in the habit they rock. haha i guess i will have to try the almond oil, i'm not sure if its worth it.

that is a good question about it being hazardous. i know its fine for fit people, but could someone old or out of shape have a heart attack? can anyone answer that? i wish i could recommend them to everyone but that issue concerns me.

They are awesome on a hot day.
I met a yoga teacher once who swore by cold showers in his teachings.

It is very recharging and invigorating.

I have heard that hot followed by cold, several sets in each shower, is really good fer what ails ya.

Sometimes after a hard day I like to get into the shower extremely hot, and throughout the shower adjust it to become ice cold. The warmth loosens up your muscles very nicely and then the cold brings them back. I dunno if it's true but i enjoy it alot

Yes the alternating hot and cold method works great for all kinds of ailments, it's called fomentations.
I first read about it in a health book from like 1890.
Which you would think had a lot of stupid info right? Nope.. a lot of the stuff they recommend you eat in there for good health is right on the money for what we are just now "discovering" to be good for you.. they just didn't have the science to back it up.. but they knew..
This book was saying stay away from refined flours, sugars, etc.. eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables.. ya know common sense shit.. which isn't "common" sense for a lot of people.

The way I heard it explained, was that the hot draws blood towards the skin, and loosens up tissues and muscles... the cold sucks the blood away and contracts them.. and this back and forth capillary action is what helps the blood circulation and regenerate tissue, which is key to just about everything.

You can use this method with all sort of things.. by focusing on key parts of the body.. like for chest colds, liver problems, etc.. just isolate the area you want to "treat" and using alternating washcloths of steaming hot for a few minutes, then take it off and put a cold washcloth on for a few minutes.. repeat. Key areas like the lower back, chest, forehead, armpits..

The Yogi who taught me the value of cold showers also said that starting hot and then adjusting to cold would be like eating a bunch of junk food and then having something healthy and would therefore be counterproductive.

Yeah, Ive got no idea on the matter. I dont trust -everything- any yogi says(since it often conflicts what another yogi will say) but it seemed like there might be something to it.

I've seen a few sources say that hot water can strip the skin of its naturally produced oils.

I know hot water opens the pores, but yeah, i think that was the arguement for cold showers.

They aren't just beneficial because of the absence of hot water; there are tons of studies that show direct benefit of cold water therapy. Here, have some wikipedia.

A reported study from the Thrombosis Institute in London into the effects of the cold bathing found that volunteers that followed a disciplined daily regime had increased immune white blood cells and the level of the bodies natural blood thinning enzymes substantially increased, improving micro circulation. It also stimulated the production of hormones such as testosterone in men, and boosted women's production of estrogen. Cold water immersion raises thresholds of pain tolerance, and aids adaptation to cold, reduces muscle spasm, can influence the frequency of respiratory infections and improve subjective well-being. It may cause an immunological modulation in terms of the Th1-type pattern, which is a proinflammatory cytokine profile. It is involved in diseases such as arthritis,[56] diabetes,[57][58] inflammatory myopathies, inflammatory bowel disease,[59] psoriasis, CFS, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, fatigue conditions,[60] auto immune disease and other inflammatory conditions. Cold water adaptation reduced total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, lowered plasma viscosity and blood pressure rate product. Cold water immersion reduces recovery time in athletes,[61] enhances repeat performance and reduces exercise induced muscle damage.[62]

Cold water exposure challenges both the neuro-endocrine and the immune systems, reduces stress hormones and attenuates their response. Increases ADH and cortisol and increases immunomodulatory cytokines.[63] Cold water exposure and adaptation can modify the sensory functions of hypothalamic thermoregulatory centres to lower heat loss and produce less heat during cold exposure and have immunostimulating effects.[64] The thermogenic action of adrenaline in cold exposure produces heat and may reduce this stress hormone.[65]

I find that its best to just have cold showers & not bother alternating with hot, i feel its good to spend a nice 10-15 mins under cold water, i read somewhere that its best to only use cold water, only for the brave!

Hrm, I just started taking them, I heard its also good for lowering anxiety levels.  This info just strengthens my resolve to keep on having
them through the cold months

Yeah the hot cold thing basically works like a pump, the hot water makes your veins and capilaries expand, drawing blood in, then the cold
water makes them shrink pumping the blood out.  Does anyone know what the optimum time you should spend between alternating between the 2 is?
