Do you feel like mankind lost something along the way?
    #10016666 -

For those of you that lived through the 60's-70's, do you feel like you were so close? I know that's vague, but watching some videos of "The Doors" made me feel like "damn, that just feels like a totally different vibe than today.". I mean obviously it's over 40 years later, but when I watch stuff like that I think "they almost had it" or at the very least they almost had enough power to start their on sub culture. I don't mean the sub culture that most of us on the shroomery are a part of. where we typically hide our true feelings in real life. I mean a sub culture that's strong enough to essentially tell everyone that doesn't agree to piss off and that we'll live how we wanna live and you can live how we live, and that's it. I don't know, I just feel like man kind lost something forever when that era died. I feel like we're stuck on this path to destruction that's impossible to stop, and most of us are just trying to make the best of it.

The problem is that too many people have spent the last 40 years thinking they were on to something in the 60's.

I think the 60s have been romanticized, like countless other periods of history.

I read a thread here, recently, talking about just that: the OP shared pictures of post-Woodstock, littered with mounds of garbage and dirty needles; it was a disgusting, filthy wasteland.

I didn't live through the 60s; but if I had, I think my perspective would be much different than that gained by watching 'The Doors.'

I think this is a pretty fair observation.

People forget that all over the world the situation was even worse than today for the average person in terms of quality of life and freedom during that time.

Youth in American had the luxury of starting another counter-culture movement like there has been in societies for centuries.
It came at a lucky time with the evolution of media, television, relative freedom from authority and poverty in the US, so things really blew up.

I say this with personally enjoying 60's-70's lore greatly. The music, the ideals, the poetry, and the fun. Those things are all important to absorb, enjoy, and not forget.

That aside, humanity wasn't different then and it's not now.
There was nothing better in the sixties. It's just one social microcosm in one small country on a globe of billions of lives, thousands of which disappear every second.
The difference is for thousands of years before our luxuries times, idealism and hippie type entertainment was crushed by starvation, war, failure to meet basic needs, and the general battle for survival.
Challenging some authority for not meeting ideals of passion, art, and love is certainly a luxury.

Keep the art, keep the love in your mind, drop the idealism and look at the big picture.

I think you may misrepresent 'quality of life', an age of
artificial sweeteners and microwave dinners isnt very
qualitative in my opinion, it's quantitative, this 'quality'
you mention is all about owning stuff, toys for children that
no longer stimulate the imagination but instead play for them
a day where the xbox, TV or the internet consumes the day

Music reflects at least some aspect of the culture that birthed it. If people weren't onto something in the 60's, as Crasher says, then that may mean that Jim Morrison was basically just talking out of his ass.

You are old as fuck.

I would 100X rather have the internet than a shovel that didn't break or a soap-box car.

Point noted.
Well I agree that our quality of life in the US consumerist-pharmaceutical-reality TV culture is certainly lowering the quality of people and their minds around in general. There is plenty wrong with the culture that has chosen to prescribe away mental development and freedom and a food system that is based around subsidies for growing inedible corn for the sake of cheapness and High Fructose Corn Syrup.

But, I see those as semantics. I was just stating that in terms of the big picture; idealism of the 60's vs the realities of human struggle throughout history and in many non-American, non-western places today.

Simply referring to quality of life at the most basic level. The meeting of basic needs and then some, even if flawed, is fundamentally better than 60's era Chinese communism where university professors, arts, and education are subjugated freely, and millions die when an uncontrolled government makes callous errors in food production.

Also we have in the US; books, education, high arts, love, development, the shroomery, movements for sustainability etc.
I see plenty wrong with the US, but I know enough individuals who take full advantage of the resources provided by this country to live intelligent, meaningful, and creative lives.

It is not entirely America's fault that it has become so developed that it has provided so many distractions, that have faults, xbox and what have you; people can choose how to live, and it is just a fucked up state of the world that such a large portion of the population has succumb to those mindless ways of living.

If all those people kept those ideals and got into politics and business instead of drum circles to truly change things, we could be living in a very different world right now.

Perhaps, but you have to take account how he so passionately boasted his ideals. What the fuck did all that yelling, screaming, and singing come from?

Just another get-rich-quick scheme? I think not. :nono:
