Birdseed tek question

Anyone in here sterilize your jars for more than 1hr at 15psi in your PC?
Just wondering because I heard there some pretty hearty endospores kicking around in them.
And since I already did 1hr in the PC already, I guess I shouldnt go another round because ill lose too much water in the jars right?

I PC'ed my jars for 1 hour, 20 minutes. Lost one to the green, one's taking off, one's a little slow, and one has nothing (too dry I think).

I often go for a full 90 minutes. Why not. The extra time is nothing, in the short or long run.

this is a little off topic but has anyone ever used 1/2 pint jars for birdseed instead of pint jars?

You could. But why? Unless that is all you have. Pints & quarts make more. More is better INHO.

You can do it, but its somewhat pointless. Birdseed is a bulk substrate, if you do a little of bulk substrate, doesn't it seem like a contratdiction. Unless you have a PC that can only hold 1/2 jars, I would recommend using quart jars.

i would be using 1/2 pints only to test it. I just wanna see if birdseed would be the right move for me. After i innoculate a couple and get some good growth them i would move to pints....Also if i am a complete jackass and F#ck up with my sterility with them i wouldnt be loosing that much seed....

Hey man you do what you gotta do, but birdseed is pretty cheap, and if you PC for long enough and don't have too many kernel pop, then you should be alright. I mean if you succeed you would have a quarts worth.

One thing about the jar maybe being too dry. If it does apear to be too dry, would you think injecting a few mm of water from a syringe would help? And if you added a few mm of water AFTER inoculation, that wouldnt harm colinization right? Maybe just hit the rizos and whatever, but nothing serious.....I think ill add water to the jar by injection if it seems a little too dry, and shake it up

I use half pinters with grain .

man I never thought to use 1/2 pints for testers, I got a few different types of seed at my parents house but I didn't want to waste a lot of spores to find out if they got fungicides in 'em. I'll try a few out, If they work good all list the brand names.

Just make sure the water and syringe are sterilized, I thought I could do the same thing with some rye and killed three jars with contams by using tap water. I thought the chlorine was enough to kill bacteria :crazy:
