"show your work" on tests in school. Does this mean display an arbitrary form of an equation?

Same class where we have to pay for the privledge of turning in our homework, other thread, has now given me back my first test.


So while I got everything right, cuz the class is easy and bullshit, I got a low B.  Why is this you ask, well here's the reason.

The test said "show your work".  Ok, this is bullshit in my opinion, but whatever.  Its a legitimate request and the prof can run their classes how they want, and it will discourage cheating- fine.


But I lost about 25% on every problem due to not displaying a particular equation the prof decided I should have shown.

example:  Need to find charge in a number of electrons to start problem.  I write:

electron charge= e-= -1.60x10^-19C
charge = 8electronsx [electron/(-1.60x10^-19 C)]^-1 = such and such C


I get this marked off by 33% because I didn't write q=Ne  (which is worthless cuz it doesn't tell you anything about what you need to know- the charge)

How did I not show this?  I showed what an electron equaled and showed the calculation, with the quantity of the charge and electron relationship.


Am I wrong here, or does what I wrote seem to comply with a "show your work" requirement?  It seems totally arbitrary to require a particular form of an equation.  What is the difference between: electron charge= e-= -1.60x10^-19C and q=Ne? (N is number of e)  The only difference is I actually show the useful information.

Another one.

We need to calculate the work done in moving a particular charge from one region of potential to another to begin our problem.

So I put WA->B= q0(VA-VB)

I get marked off by 25% (yes the amount I get marked off appears completely arbitrary and no relation to the problem)
and writes in red "show VA-VB=WAB/q


Its the same fucking thing!  How am I supposed to know the prof wants particular terms on one side?  Why the hell would I show an equation for work per charge when I needed to find work?


How did I get marked off for giving the exact same equation the prof wanted but written to find what I actually need to find?


I'm pissed.  Am I justified, or am I wrong?  Give it to me straight.  I'm interested if anyone can find a pattern here and if anyone could tell me how I should write the equations on the paper to avoid getting marked off?  I mean really, how do I know what to write?  Seems arbitrary to me.

i didnt read your other thread, but i think you are right.

he's a teacher right? so his objective ought to be teaching you something. i mean, if hes not satisfied with you showing that you can do the problems, he has other motives than teaching :confused:

if i had your teacher i would drop the class and take it from someone else if i could. i wouldnt want some weird anal prof fucking with my gpa, esp if i knew i understood it.

I had a grader like that last semester.  He marked me off for citing things from the book and lecture so I ended up deriving many things over and over again in a very spelt out fashion.  Best thing to do is be over pedantic about everything.

Write any equations you use in the form the lecturer gave them to you. I've had similar problems in the past, and it's usually best to simply capitulate and spell out all trivial steps. :shrug: The guy sounds like a straight-up jerk, but you've got to play his game.

Did you go to his office with these particular complaints?

On the one where its the same equation, you just changed it around to make it simpler,  show that to him.  Perhaps draw up a proof that shows the equations are essentially the same.

If he still insists on requiring his exact formula, ask why he prefers this formula and what do you learn from only using the one. 

If he's a dick about the whole thing, appeal the grade.  His colleges might see the light or he will capitulate before the appeal to prevent looking like an imbecile (also, i'm an imbecile because i just misspelled that word like 6 times before getting it right.)
