For most people, there is no point to find your max, but for those that want to build strength it is the basis for their next month of routines.
For example (using round numbers for ease of math), Say you max out at 100lbs. The next week you do 3 sets of 10 at 60% (60lbs), 3 times a week (I did mon, wed, and fri.) Week 2, you do 3 sets of 8 at 70% (70lbs). The third week, you do 3 sets of 7 at 80% (80lbs). And the fourth week you do 3 sets of 6 at 90% (90lbs). You will definitely need a spotter to do this with, because you wont be able to do all the lifts on your own. To start your next cycle, find your new max and repeat the process. That is how I got from benching 135 to 335 in about a year and a half.
