Ya do'nt need to.  "The word of sin is restriction" AL I,41.  But even restriction is not always restriction.  Some eggs hatch.

how did people back in the biblical era know that even today these "sins" would be so hard to uphold. i understand that following these will keep us a better society and make us better people, but why is it difficult to obey them? where does the desire to sin come from?

The biblical sins are hard to follow as they restrict natural human nature/instinct.  Thus following them can be a sin(Thelemically defined) itself.

I don't believe in sins. It is better to look at an action and determine if it causes a sum effect like suffering or pleasure to whoever is affected by the action.

agreed, i think the bible is misinterpreted in this respect, and I think this is what people dont understand. and yeah, there are more "sins" but they revolve mostly around moral attitudes than anything set in stone.

for the record, it kind of goes like this.

Wrath

its alright to be angry, but being mean and nasty to someone or hurting someone is a bad action. we are all guilty of this.

Gluttony

more so the greed of eating, i dont really know what to make of this, other than that if you hoard all the goodies and the needy go hungry, etc

Pride

no one will tell you not to have pride, but this is more narcissism, or overwhelming blind pride, etc.

Avarice

being a greedy asshole is definitely not a good thing

sloth

being lazy is something we all do, but for example, I am not a lazy stoner. Those who are lazy stoners would be lazy without weed, but these assholes make us all look like "lazy stoners" and stupid.

Lust

This one is probably most controversial, as obviously sex is a normal thing. I think if you use someone for sex, maybe thats the victim in this one. I am sure we have all known someone, maybe a guy who doesnt care about his gf other than sex. this is different than having mutual one night stands or when i just dont call her back because she got the wrong idea.

Envy

well you can see how this would be bad sometimes.

Sometimes: ..... I think organized religion in general often uses their version of a "sin" to maintain control and influence.  History shows us in my opinion, and many theologists agree that organized religion is one of the most potent tools of tyranny ever witnessed on this planet.  As such, "sins" being defined by an organized religion are likely to foster control. 
I believe faith is a personal matter, as described by many religious texts.  Organized religion is a bureaucracy between faith and the individual.

The "seven deadly sins" aren't in the bible, they only exist within the realm of catholic doctrine.

Thank you for pointing this out, I was reading through to see if the point had been made.

The seven deadly sins are sins that, if overindulged in, can supposedly lead to death or damnation.
And thats a good point- overindulge in your lusts, you could get AIDS.  Overindulge in your gluttony, you'll become obese and get health complications.  Overindulge in sloth and you'll starve to death because you're a lazy bum.  It goes on.
