Effects of Caffeine on Grow.

Mmk guys i have been gone for quite a long time but i am about to start a "minigrow" as i would like to keep my bipolar disorder in check w/ out going through the bs the doctors require.(don't worry i already tested this).

So i decided because i soaked my wbs last time with a pot of coffee and had quite remarkable results, and due to laziness of not wanting to brew a pot of coffee for such a small grow, that i would skip it and to spice things up add a ton of caffeine to my wbs soak. I currently have 1 quart jar soaking(yes its small i am aware) with 1 stacker 2 contents emptied into it and one crushed and dissolved no doz in the soak. The ingredients from these caffeine pills are as follows(combined):

400mg anhydrous caffeine
-Proprietary Blend... 196mg (Kola Nut Seeds 3mg caffeine, Citrus Aurantium 2mg synepehrine, Cassia Mimosoides, White Willow Bark)
-TriGuggulyptoid Complex... 25mg (green tea leaves <1mg caffeine group alkaloids, guggulsterone, gymnema.)

I have not read anything yet on tests whether caffeine is good or bad, or if it makes any difference at all, but this should be interesting as there is quite a lot of caffeine in that lone jar along with other oddities that may be absorbed into the wbs.


Any thoughts? I will be posting pics as much as i can, but i am busy...

I just throw the fresh coffe in with the soak i figure it like brewing in the water and the grounds help too.

well when you brew coffee the machine uses hot water and usually uses pressure i believe or something of that sorts, like if you have ever tried to make coffee like tea it doesn't work. The main difference between adding coffee liquid or not, is that nitrogen and who knows what from the bean is added in. I mean im sure some nitrogen and stuff will come from the green tea and w/e else was in their but it was such a small amount i doubt it will have much effect(speaking of nitrogen).

esspresso machines use pressure coffee makers don't.

you can make coffee just like tea, it's called a coffee press and it tastes great.

yes i understand it is acidic. my last grow, the grow where i used a pot of drip brewed coffee in the wbs soak, ended up amazing. I can't say for sure that this was the cause but when the mycelium had visible growth within 3 days and no contams it might be a good thing for it. but who knows coulda been a freak occurrence. Oh and due to the amount of quart jars i did the coffee was probably in a ratio of coffee to water 1:4 or 1:5 so it wasn't concentrated caffeine like it is atm.

really i couldn't care less if this little experiment doesn't work and i have to start over, i have plenty of material from my last grow and loosing 1 jar will not be the end of the world lol...


i doubt that adding 2 caffeine pills will make much of a difference in ph though.

mm this is true but you also use boiling water and you press the coffee. and i didn't really wanna keep the water hot in my soak, for one it would be hot and i imagine it would probably make the stench of the soaked wbs that much worse lol.

hmm i dunno i just use small amts like maybe 2 table spoons for 6 qts wbs it doesnt seem to do any wrong to it i dunno but when i dump it out in the strainer the water is brown not like the usual merky brown either.

meh maybe it does work, i mean you are letting the coffee soak for quite a long time.


don't forget that if your soaking wbs and probably grain as well the water is supposed to turn that color lol.

I let it soak 24 hours if i can and i allways use hott water to soak then i let it drain till it dont stick to my hand no more and yea wbs turns brown but when i add the coffe its more like a coffe brown.

i think i let it soak 15 hours last time


this time its guna be close to 20 hours as i have a lot of work tomorrow. hopefully it doesnt ferment from soaking for too too long but it should be fine.

to be honest I'm suspicious that coffee grounds are not potent so much because they have caffeine. But rather because they are ground grains like brown rice flower except with inferior nutrients.

i believe you are correct on this, coffee adds nitrogen and changes the ph and etc.

i basically am doing this for shits and giggles lol, but i may simmer the wbs with some coffee as i think it def helped with colonization last time.

people have said coffee makes for faster colonization of spawn, some even say it reduces sliminess with WBS.

Coffee works mostly by lowering the pH, which gets it down into the range that mycelium prefers.  Many growers have added caffeine pills to their soak water with zero benefit.  Other growers have used decaf coffee and it worked just as well as regular coffee.  Coffee has nutrients, antioxidants, and a hundred or more other compounds not fully understood, but the caffeine isn't what makes it useful for grain spawn.
