Compost or Manure...which is better?
    #977071 - 10/20/02 01:09 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hey y'all, it's the Kang here!

I've been sniffin' around these poop salesman but I ain't no Hound Dog, I dunno which is best. I seen compost from one place for $4 a lb, includes shipping but another place sells 10 oz of dried poop for $15. After adding water, I guess that would prolly be about a pound but it's still 4X what the other sells for. Thats Too Much Money Honey!

Is dried poop really that much better than compost that it should be priced so high?
I would think compost would be a better product. After all, isn't compost horse poop with extra things added to make it even better?

And what about fresh poop?

Someone please help me, It's Now or Never!

Best would be to go collect dried dung from a cow pasture if you've got one in an hour driving distance from you. Then, you get as many pounds as you want for free, except for the gasoline cost.

You've probably got an old caddy, that might be a lot of money when you press the accelerator.

Manure is by far the best Ive seen. Never really seen much compost.

Fresh poo is bad because of high ammonia from urine. But like angryshroom said, the best option would be to just go find a stable and ask the owner if you could shovel some poo for your garden. I really don't think too many farmers would turn you away from doing work they themselves would have to do. Compost, esp store bought, isn't really great, but hey the best way for you to know is by learning on your own.

Thank you, thank you verrry much!

I'd still like to find out about the compost, it seems like a lot of work to make it, there must be something to it. And it is sure a lot cheaper than the dried poop!

Dude, so find out, go out and by some compost, then find some dried horse or cow poo, and do a comparison. Go look on the grow log forum, see how many people use store bought compost, not many, you know why? cause it doesn't work all that great.

Check out the "horse poo tek", and enjoy a day inthe country. Manure seems to be the 'easiest' and most popular method here. Fresh always beat sbagged-no matter what it is you're talking about. Mushroom compsot is at a different 'stage' then plan tcompost.

Actually mushroom compost is plant compost. Mushroom compost is compost that mushroom have already been grown on, there for all the nutrients that your mushrooms would use are gone, but its supposed to be really good for plants.

Yup, the stuff in the stores bought bags is "SPENT" mushroom compost. Meaning it has been used. Then, after it's cropped out, it is sold for a plant or garden compost. 6T

You could always eat a grain and vegistable only diet for a week, and use your own poo.

Maybe. Maybe not. Anyone know?

Some of the more experienced cultivators here use combinations of wheat straw and dung (poo) in different ratios like 60/40 to 90/10. They will tell you that this is preferable to strictly dung.

Mushroom compost is essentially straw and dung that is allowed to decompose a bit, making it easier for the mycelia to break it down.

Beneficial microorganisms are more prevalent in compost than in straw alone.
This provides a bulk substrate less prone to contams.

My suggestion would be to buy your dried dung if you cant score any free farmer shit and by a mini bail of straw from a craft store like Michael's and prepare your own "quasi compost".

I used it, but yields weren't great. You can get that crap (literally & figuratively) at home depot. Its cheap, so if you want too, go try it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

kind of right... it's the bacterial enzymes that allow herbivores  to digest cellulose (indirectly and only partially).      we need more bio trivia goin' on.

I wasn't planning on getting the store bought spent mushroom manure, I was more looking at the actual horse manure compost offered at the sporelab.

But I think I will try to get some fresh horse poop, some dried poop and some compost and test them all.

Don`t buy the mushroom compost it`s normally wood based, normally old pine bark.
So it won`t really be worth it.
It`s better for you soil.

Also I would stay as far from fresh dung as possible, it won`t work at all.
If you`re going to get fresh dung then you`ll really need to dry it out for a few days first.
