Feb. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The stimulus package the U.S. Congress is completing would raise the government’s commitment to solving the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more than 90 percent of the nation’s home mortgages.

Email this to everyone you know. Have them flood the White House asking to pay of everyone's mortgage instead of throwing our tax money away to banks and corrupt businesses. That would stimulate the economy. People could buy new cars, food, medical insurance and everything else they need.

Dear Pubber,

Keep economic-related topics out of the pub.  Just because you read an article or two does not mean you understand the economy.  Did I click the link you posted?  No.  Am I going to? No.  Do I know more about what's going on than 98% of the people on this forum?  Yes.  Do we discuss it regularly in the Money Matters forum?  Yes.  Should you take this conversation there, so you can be answered by a more economic-minded audience?  yes.

Would paying everyones mortgages help the economy more than this stimulus bill?  No.  Paying off mortages would not save or create jobs, would not boost consumer spending to the extent that it needs to, would not create/update our national infastructure to the level it needs to be, and definitely WOULD NOT turn our economy around.

Our current fiscal stimulus package, albeit imperfect, addresses everything listed above that paying mortages does not do.  Granted, it would definitely help those homeowners who are on the brink of foreclosure - but they are a very small part of the problem.  Sure, the problem started there, in the housing market, but quickly spread to the financial markets, and now - the real economy.

Will this bill totally fuck our public debt? Probably.  Will Obama need to completly overhaul entitlement programs (social security/medicare) in order to ensure the US is around in another few decades?  Yes.

Should you just stfu now about things you dont really understand?  Yes.

P.S.  Sorry if this post came off in an offensive manner.  Its just these days everybody thinks they're an economist - and are simply disseminating garbage information to equally-ignorant people who eat it up like ER spoilers.

I just read that article.  It as saying how the Fed has been sued for not releasing the information regarding who it has been lending to under the various policy instruments created as a result of this particular financial crisis.

Clearly, if the Fed were to release this information and the American Investor found out who was receiving the benefits of these lending facilities - the trust (and therefore share price & availability of that company to raise equity) would collapse, and the firm would be in a worse position than it was before it borrowed from the Fed.

This is why the FRB hasn't disclosed who they lent to.  However, you can view the amounts loaned on their website, easily accessable to all.  Another thing, while the government's committment may be hovering at 9T+, a significant portion of that is in LOANS, which they will receive payment on with interest.  Granted, some of these loans will be defaulted on (as is a risk with any loans), but the alternative choice of 'inaction' is unpaletable by most economists and politicians.
