USA Swimming suspends Phelps for 3 months

Michael Phelps was suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming, the latest fallout from a photo that showed the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The sport’s national governing body also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period, effective Thursday.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado-based federation said in a statement.

“Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”

Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world’s most acclaimed athletes. Now he’s enduring a wave of bad news in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.

Earlier Thursday, cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. announced it wouldn’t renew its sponsorship contract with Phelps, saying his behavior is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.” The swimmer appeared on the company’s cereal boxes after his Olympic triumph.

Phelps has acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment.” He didn’t dispute the authenticity of the photo, reportedly taken at a house party while Phelps was visiting Columbia, S.C., in November during an extended break from training.

The 23-year-old has resumed training in his hometown of Baltimore, but his plans to return to competitive swimming will have to be put on hold. Phelps had been planning to compete in early March at a Grand Prix meet in Austin, Texas.

Now, he won’t be able to allowed to compete until early May, which would give him just over two months to get in some racing before July’s world championships in Rome.

honestly no one cared he did it if he would have been private about it. You need to be respectful to the kids, who have young fragile minds. Thats why instead of educating them we police the world with our tax dollars... n they use hand me down text books.

He could of said it helped him swim faster... n this why it should be legal. b/c it made him a great athlete.
I saw a guy on ESPN.. basically yelling at him through his show. I just wanted to beat the shit out of that tard. He probably toked it up on the ride home from work. Dont be hypocrits there is far to many of them in the world already. Seriously ppl this was a accepted practice up til  50 or so years ago. When the U.S. got greedy.... they made it illegal now the government breeds these social retards...that think they're going to hell if they smoke weed. . . Its just as bad as u smoking that cig.. and drinkin that glass of burbon.

Notice how the suspension ends two months before the world championships?  God forbid everyone lose millions in endorsements and TV ratings by excluding the golden boy from the pool.

Phelps has the entire sport by the balls and should know it.

Haha, I wouldn't go that far.

He is a talented swimmer and no doubt would have gotten those medals with or without cannabis.

The main thing here is, it didn't negatively affect him. He's an occasional cannabis user, and he STILL got all those medals; that's the message this ordeal should send out. It's some great PR for weed. But people are just so ignorant and have their heads up their asses. What can you do though. :justdontknow:

Why is the country being so fucking stuck up against this? Phelps was not my role model for winning 8 gold medals, but once I heard what he did, oh man.

I was looking up to this guy! He officially joined the drug war saying "sorry guys, I treated pot irresponsibly and that was bad." Now the country wants to be all butt hurt about some stupid fucking pot?

Not trying to be the conspiracy theorist, but I think there is more to this than meets the eye.  I was not aware that being a pro athlete required you to act any certain way, other than that you perform and perform fairly.  It is obvious that Phelps performs.  So what is the problem?  Phelps did not fail any official drug test.  Marijuana is not a performance enhancer. 

Heres what I think the problem is:  Phelps made big news with this-  Everyone and their dog is talking about it.  The problems is that, if Phelps did not face any penalty, nothing would have happened.  And if nothing happens, when Phelps wins another million medals in 2012, he wins it as an unpenalized marijuana smoker.  Another huge example to the public:  Marijuana does not fuck up your life, and it is not a health risk.  No one needs to have their shit together more than a Pro athlete, and if Marijuana doesn't get in the way of that, than how can it be this terrible thing all our parents, teachers, and Government's tell us about?  Phelps did not get in trouble because anyone is concerned with him, he got in trouble because the government is concerned about everyone watching him.  They have made an example of him now:  If you smoke marijuana,  people will take away what you love doing best for 3 months. 

  "But mommy,  Michael Phelps smokes marijuana, and he obviously isn't unhealthy or "a bad person" (he just won the Olympics)"    "Johnny, its not that Marijuana is detrimental, or that it makes you "a bad person", its just that some people higher up than you don't like it."

If Phelps had any gusto, he should have spoke up for what he believed in, and not apologized for what he did, but apologize for bursting peoples bubbles.  Fuck the sponsors.  Bite the hand that feeds,Michael-  They don't give a shit about you, they just want to sell more Wheaties.

According to the story, no one knew him at that party. He was there (USC) visiting his gf, and shows up at this house party unannounced. The dude who took the pic was some stranger who saw an opportunity to cash in, I guess.

Disappointed?

It made me feel damn proud to be an American, thought Phelps was gay until I saw the photo of him taking that enormous rip. Can you imagine how much smoke his lungs can hold? Twenty to One he could clear a 3-foot double-Bubbler and hold it for at least a minute.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Michael Phelps says it's fair for USA Swimming to suspend him for three months, the latest fallout from a photo showing the Olympic great inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

Phelps was back at his regular pool in Baltimore on Friday, a day after his suspension.

"It's not my decision. It's theirs," Phelps said of USA Swimming's decision. "I have nothing to say, but if that's they want to do, that's their choice. It's something that USA Swimming came up with. It's fair. Obviously, for a mistake you should get punished."

The latest fallout has been much greater than in 2004, when an underage Phelps was arrested for drunken driving three months after the Athens Olympics. He pleaded guilty and apologized to his fans, saying he wouldn't make the same mistake again.

Phelps won a record eight gold medals in Beijing and returned to America as one of the world's most acclaimed athletes. He made headlines of a different kind, however, in the wake of the photo, published Sunday by News of the World, a British tabloid.

Phelps wasn't sure how the negative publicity might influence his decision to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.

"I'm taking it step by step, day by day. There's still a long way between now and then," he said. "But I'm back here, I'm training for who knows what yet. But I'm back in the water, doing the thing I love."

That's a welcome diversion from the attention he's getting outside the pool.

"From waking up to megaphones outside your house at 7:30 in the morning to still photographers out there every day for the last four days from 7:30 to when I left for a workout, I can just do what's normal for me," he said. "And right now that's me coming to the pool every day."

Phelps recently resumed serious training with the goal of qualifying for this summer's world championships in Rome. With the three-month suspension he won't be able to take on any rivals until early May, which would give him a little more than two months of competition before July's world championships in Rome.

The U.S. team for Rome will be chosen at the national championships July 7-11 in Indianapolis.
