Court Today

Sometime in mid-November, a cop saw me run a stop sign while pulling onto Main St and pulled a U.  Since I was a little bit ahead, I sped up and took a left in hopes that he might decide not to follow.  Anyway, he did and when he caught up with me he gave me a ticket for reckless driving because he felt I was trying to elude him.

When I got to court today, I dressed really nice and told the judge politely that I wasn't attempting to elude the police, but I did run the stop sign and so if he would drop the ticket down to failure to stop at a stop sign or a lower charge then I would be satisfied.  Instead, the judge said there was sufficient evidence to find me guilty of reckless driving and after he looked at my driving record (two speeding tickets - one for 22 over on the interstate and one for 16 over in a 35), he told me he was suspending my license for 90 days with no possibility of a restricted license, ordered me to pay a 500 dollar fine and attend an 8 hour driver improvement class, and pay court costs. 

I was dumbfounded that the judge fucked me so hard in court today, so I appealed the ruling and got to keep my license until my appeals court date on April 15th.

I spent all morning in court, and all afternoon talking to lawyers for free consultations.  One guy knows the cop from several court cases and thinks that he can get the charge dropped to improper driving and maybe get the fine reduced and definitely let me keep my license.  I might have to do some community service, but I wouldn't mind that, or having to take a driving improvement course.  I really just dont want my insurance to jump or have my license revoked.  The lawyer will cost 500 dollars, but I figure it's definitely worth it.

After I talked to about 6 lawyers, I had a three hour calculus class.

it's not as bad as it sounds.  i wasnt turning left and right or flying through any other stopsigns. i just sped up and took that one left... then the cop turned and caught up, so i pulled right over.

I represented myself because I thought that the worst that would happen is I'd stick the reckless charge and have to pay a couple hundred dollar fine and go to driver improvement. 

There was another guy there charged with reckless driving because he fell asleep while he was driving, knocked out a fence and wrecked into a creek.  The judge dismissed that to improper driving.  That guy could have fucking killed someone. 

So i run a stop sign and get my license suspended for 90 days.

Well, at least you learned its not a good idea to try to run from the cops...  (at least for minor things)


I tried that once years ago, and...well...it didn't turn out so good.

I got my license suspended for 180 days for possesion of some bud. I wasn't even in a car. 90 days for actually doing something bad in a car isn't bad compaired lol. That sucks tho man, im sorry to hear you got in trouble.

I went to court an hour after the decision and got my license back, so I can still drive now... so it's not so bad.

i'm not too worried, i have faith in my lawyer.

No, you ran a stop sign, tried to avoid a cop, and have two pretty serious speeding violations.

I understand it sucks, I've been there, but when I got caught I got caught, it was my fault.

:lol: Well I didn't have any money, but I did have two legs that worked much better than theirs, or a more intimate knowledge of the roads I was on, or was just able to outrun somebody else.

i'm not saying it wasnt my fault, i just kind of freaked and did something stupid.  I was also running late for a dentist appointment to get my cavity filled, and they had told me if I was late that they'd have to rescheduled so i really didn't wanna get a ticket.

all i'm saying is the punishment for the crime just really doesn't fit.

the lawyer told me i really should have had a lawyer going in there. 
i wont make that mistake again.

the speeding tickets that i had gotten were also 2 and 3 years old.

Running from police on foot is generally a safer idea than running from cops in a vehicle.

I kinda have to agree on the running thing, especially if you know the area. In my city if you are on a bike and the chase breaks 125 they have to halt pursuit which has saved my ass a few times.

That only works if you're in a city without a ghetto bird though.

If you're not, they'll only call off the ground persuit, but keep tailing you via air until you slow down/pull off and they can get a ground unit to take you down...

the good thing about appeals is you cant get a worse fine or whatever,the next judge will either over rule this decision and reduce it or he'll just uphold it

the real beauty is if you are ever put on a supervized bond or parole,the appeal in the district courts and time waitng for your next appearance will eat into your sentence

No doubt.  The only time I took off in the vehicle I had a good head start a knew a path I could take off the road to leave the car and run off on foot.

That was the nice thing about living in Alaska, even in the middle of the city you'd find random paths into forested areas or parks or something.

I've ran on foot, bike, atv, and the once in the car... probably wasn't a smart thing to do because if I got caught I would have been in some deep shit but I was probably drunk for every incident and my instincts just told me to go.
