So im located in michigan and 2 really good luthiers live here, One is Mike Koontz, he made the bass guitar for bootzy in Parliment funkadelic, the other is Tom Pellerito, he's done guitars for the Bob Segar band.
I've been working on this 1978 Gibson SG thats had all kinds of strange problems including a horrific back bow to the neck wich i just recently fixed by loosending the truss rod (wich was way overtightened) and leaving it in the high humidity of the bathroom after taking a shower. The neck warped some relief back into itself. Before that it was a cracked headstock wich i rebroke and repaired properly by filing open the wound, cleaning with alcohole, and gluing.
I want to do kinda a better than original custom restoration. Im storing all my supplies in a 56 quart Tote till i have the kinda mooolaaa to approach a luthier to throw it all together (if they are even willing to approach such a project)
So what im looking at:
New binding (needs refreted)
New Fretwire (old frets are dented past redressing)
New Ebony Fretboard (Old fretboard has finger grooves worn in from lack of lemon oil treatement)
NOS gibson SG headstock laminate (Messed up from when the headstock cracked in half)
Stain
Instrument Laquer
New Nickle coated Pickgaurd screws and pickup trim ring screws.
NOS Harmonica Style tune-o-matic bridge (getting harder to find only on mid-late 70's gibsons, my bridge saddles were made of zinc and are totally blown out, i threw a regular tune-o-matic off my les paul on their and i couldn't belive how much tone and sustain the guitar was hiding)
New Truss rod nut (truss rod is still in perfect condition, someone used the wrong tool on the nut in a previous life)
New Nut (needs to be crafted by someone better than me, i shaped a leftover blank from the guitar store from a previous gibson project of theirs to fit in their)
Mother of Pearl Inlay material for new ebony fretboard
Ebony fretboard stain to make it look more consistant.
A thin Copper foil to replace the electronic sheilding thats broken inside the instrument
New Selector knob
I hope that if i brought a real luthier the guitar, the materials, and a detail list of what i want done with them, i would hope he could put it all together for me for under 400$. Hopefully more around like 250-300 but who knows if they would even approach this much work.
-------------------- “By calling attention to ‘a well regulated militia’, the ’security’ of the nation, and the right of each citizen ‘to keep and bear arms’, our founding fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny which gave rise to the Second Amendment will ever be a major danger to our nation, the Amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic civilian-military relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of his country. For that reason, I believe the Second Amendment will always be important.”
