Anyone ever brew their own beer?
    #9604474 -

With one of those home brewing kits? Sounds like it would be fun. Fill up the bathtub and have come homemade brews for a few weeks... Anyone?

Good ole bathtub beer.

I used to brew, I really want to get back into it.  You should definitely start brewing, it's easy and a lot of fun, especially when you get into experimenting with ingredients.

Getting drunk off of something you made yourself is :awesome:.

Yep, used to brew all the time.  Still have about 5 empty kegs in my garage that I've been neglecting to fill.  My highlights were a smooth and sweet chocolate porter, and a 1 malt beer made from bru-malt and all saaz hops.  That went down so fast, it was so good... mmmmm..  It's way fun, and you can actually get some good beer out of it if you're careful.

The first ingredient to good beer is a sanitary work environment

Wow that's awesome. I'm assuming they usually come out a little darker and thicker then a college kid is used to drinking? My favorite beer is Keystone

Yeah, it's funny how it works.  Typically the lighter and more mild a beer is,  the harder it is to get it right.  It's easy to mask imperfections with big dark beers.  Not so much with something that taste's mostly like water anyway

I enjoy a pale ale with a meal, so I might try and brew something similar to that "dry" taste.

How long would you say the process takes from start to finish?

Approximate

1 Day to brew
14 Days to Ferment
14 Days to "age/carbonate"  (this is minimum, it's way better if you let it go longer)

So about a month.

for real? i think that's quite unfortunate.

i've never tried to brew a light lager or anything of the sort... my fav homebrews have been stouts, an ipa, and a tasty honey-amber. after about 3 batches you get the process down and its damn good.

Well I rate my beers on 3 factors:

- Price
- Binge Drinkability
- If they have witty sayings on the cans

Keystone ranks number one, Busch Light (in a keg) comes a close second, followed by Pabst BR.

er, just used carboys, or a 5-6 gallon bucket. no need for the bathtub.

we just bought the stuff to do it again, Ive done it with my dad.

Lagers are harder, and you can mimic stuff, get recipes, etc. Ive done things which are ales, always with malt extract, no mash tun.

One day I will have a room dedicated to home brew, and fill kegs (dont know what beyond cornelius kegs, used to put soda in those) with the stuff.

Made a GREAT Hazed and Infused (a colorado microbrew) clone, it wasnt exact, but it was its own thing. Getting buzzed on your own beer ftw

Alton Brown, the man on food network made an episode on how to brew your own beer and gave scientific explanations to it

Although he's corny, he's brilliant at the same time, and given his background he seems more legitimate than anyone else on that channel. Understanding how beer is made through scientific explanation allows you to infer ways to improve.

I saw that one, he didnt use a glass carboy just another bucket.

Zymurgy is quite scientific, I like his dry humor, and Alton Brown is a Shroomery member (look it up) his avatar is him with a chefs knife.

Food network wont let him do a cooking with Cannabis Episode.

I saw him do how to make pancakes once, I wanted to shoot myself in the face. Although I can see him being good with something a little more complicated :P

I have brewed a few cases back in the day  :beercat:

A friend of mine is really getting into it now. Too bad he loves Pale Ales b/c thats all he brews and I hate that hoppy shit.

There are two ways to get to the top of an oak tree: start climbing or sit on an acorn.

Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?
