Tiger Skin and Meat For Sale!
    #9593316 -

I thought I'd make a quick thread to help explore which sides of which fences P&S posters sit on this one. It came up before in a more indirect manner, so I thought I'd resurrect the topic.

Tiger skins are huge and beautiful, and presumably quite warm. I admit without qualms that I would love the opportunity to have one. At the same time, I've never had tiger meat, but I've heard of it being consumed before, and it could very well be a tasty, protein-rich dish.

Of course, tigers are endangered, mostly due to habitat loss and fragmentation. One of the biggest incentives for conservation of tigers, their habitat, and the wide variety of other life-forms associated with these habitats, I think, is profit. After all, it isn't as though malevolent forces have been conspiring against the tiger and its habitat, but rather gradual human interference with the way of life that naturally supports tigers: things such as farming, as well as providing for human security.

Obviously, things like tiger skins would command a very healthy price, and would even carry with it the prestige of being "green". As tigers are endangered, the groundwork is already in place for effective regulation by governments, as they are already involved in regulation to support the tiger, so the opening of a commercial marketplace for tiger products that would respect the natural rights of tigers could surely be implemented - no raising tigers in cages, but rather establishing large, natural areas in which tigers would be raised free-range.

No one could deny the fact that effectively regulated, commercial utilization of a species of animal can have widespread success in bringing back said species from the brink. Thirty years into the last century, white-tail deer were estimated to be down to a population of 300,000, and now they have a population around 300,000,000. The same thing holds true for turkeys, and other similar examples....

So, what do you think? Would you buy a tiger skin if you had the chance, knowing that it was supporting the sustainability and future of tiger populations, or would you be protesting governments who dared to support the survival of a species in such a manner? Would you decry the idea that the most effective means of accomplishing this could very well be to translate it to the bottom-line of cold, hard cash? How else would you keep farmers from further encroaching upon wild habitat, to support themselves by growing crops, and to subsequently protect themselves from starved tigers by shooting them when they come for the attack? Wouldn't raising land-values of the area that needs to be protected by finding ways to utilize that environment, as it naturally stands, be the most efficient, effective way to preserve the land and keep poor farmers from ruining it?

This applies likewise to the rainforest. Its the choice between raising cows or harvesting iguanas, keeping in mind that, with iguanas, the rainforests stay naturally intact, and also that iguana meat was imported into the UK in lieu of beef during the Mad Cow Disease scare, being served up at McDonald's even.

I'd be all for it, though I don't know if a tiger skin rug would go well with my panda slippers and black rhino leather couch. But yes, I think that a market for sustainable products from those animals would provide an economic incentive to keep the species alive.

I wouldn't buy tiger skin because it isn't a very good fur in my opinion. You are better off with northern animal furs if you want something warm. The only reason to get it is because it's a tiger and... it's a tiger. That's it. Seriously, better furs out there, and I know, my grandpa was a trapper and I went to his trap line with him a couple times and tried the furs. I do agree that the commercialization of tiger fur/meat would be very effective in keeping a higher, healthier population.

Just because its a tiger? Couldn't one be interested in tiger skin due to the aesthetic value of the colors and their subsequent contrasts due to the patterns involved?

This one doesn't look too spectacular, but you get the idea.
I'm sure you're right regarding warmth though. Brought back a reindeer skin from the North, and it fits the bill quite well.

I would buy a tiger skin regardless.
But yes, as long as something constructive turns out of it, then it is only for the best.
Also, I think that protesting against something like that doesn't really make sense, even using the excuse that we don't have the "right" to decide for other beings. The idea of needing a right in order to do something sounds just too irrational to me. Of course we don't know what the tigers would choose if they could express their desires (and IF they would reach a consensus ), but couldn't the same thing be said about parents raising their kids?
Who knows, maybe if we'll keep them around long enough, they will have the chance to evolve into beings that can actually communicate with us.

I wouldn't see what's so bad about this either. It's only a prof that some people really do have the ability of mixing two or more interests into one constructive action. :sun:

Yeah, that's what I meant, aesthetic value. As opposed to functional value.

I would rather have some kind of aquatic mammal fur personally, for warmth and comfort. Otter is nice, same with beaver. I read that platypus fur is really warm.

Are these tigers, although free range, essentially being allowed to live for the purpose of being turned into a meat and fur product?  Are you proposing large, free range tiger farms, where each is destined for a fine lady's coat?

Or is this a sacrificing a few for the increase in the tiger population overall?  Say, for every 1 tiger we are hunting for fur, another 15 are allowed to run healthy and free due to our repopulation efforts?

New life will always fill the gaps caused by extinctions, and it seems like many people who want to preserve as many species as possible are only doing so so that their children can continue to goggle at them in the future, not out of any real compassion for the animals.  I do think we should keep our footprint small, though.

Tiger fur? What's the point? I wouldn't wear it if I had it.

Not really.
Anyways, there are weak chances that nature will replicate something as rare as a tiger, and if one's intention is to preserve the tiger, then I'm sure you must see the conflict in all that.

Would simply wanting for your kids to enjoy the beauty and force of a tiger be an un-worthy reason to preserve them? Not to me, especially when I consider how a kid would react, the questions it would raise it his mind, the creativity, the potential passion or compassion for these animals.
It makes sense to me to try to keep this experience of being alive as filled with diversities as possible, and not just shrugging off to an extinction, even if the only reason why we would keep them alive would be for our children.

Well I may be a bit of a hypocrite here, since the reason I think we should keep our footprint small is for our own safety.  The slower the world around us changes, the easier we will be able to adapt.

True, without tigers there is no possibility for compassion for tigers.

We'll use the meat to make some delicious stake with Brussels sprouts & garlic. :drooling:

But the world is changing anyways, regardless of our footprint.
Besides, one's ability to adapt is purely psychological and it doesn't make much sense to me to pamper ourselves just to create an easy experience while we're alive. I personally prefer a intricate and diverse life, full of challenges of all sorts, as I've discovered it to be the healthiest recipe for me, and also what stimulates me to evolve, change, and grow out of whatever irrational thought I sometimes wrap around myself.

Yes the world will change, regardless on what decisions we make. But it is not guarnteed that things will change for the better, or that our ecosystem will maintain even a faint resembalance of balance.. Coexisting is needed..

I think what he meant was that an ecosystem tends to fill empty gaps, maybe not with a tiger but something else. You actually see this a lot today... for example look at the cod fishery in the atlantic. The cod were overfished, so they stopped fishing them in Canada. But the problem is the niche they once held is now held by something else, so the cod can't repopulate to the levels they were before. There was a gap, and it was filled.

And certainly if you go back to the last mass extinction event (a HUGE gap) you can see that everything from dolphins to tigers evolved from a small rodent like animal (over a few millions of years) to fill it.

But this planet has never had such a large scale upheavel to it's balance, as we have produced. We may not be as instantly destructive as a comet,or a massive series of eruptions, but our detriment is there. I am not anti hunting by any means. People need to eat, but to hunt for pleasure, well, this only displays in a great way the defect in so called humanity..

But was that really an upheaval, or was that a natural balance. By comparing the two, wouldn't you be insinuating that mother nature has ordained us as a method of population control. That doesn't seem logical. I am no genius, just a very analytical person.. We are the only species that kills for pleasure,(on a regular basis), the only species that does not adapt to it's environment, but rather, adapts its environment. We are a cancer, in a much more evolved manifestation.
