Your sarcasm is overwhelmingly subtle. :smirk:

Christ, I mean who DOESN'T have the time for all that?

I don't think the originator of this thread means you should do everything yourself all the time. That's not workable.

I think he was giving his opinion that, if you're going to eat pre-packaged, pre-cooked, pre-processed, delivered cow, you should have at least once killed, butchered, and cooked something living yourself.

I sorta agree with him. :mushroom2:

As do I. Becomming aware of your impact on your reality seems to have a good effect. ON YOU!

right, and for those of us that may go through 5-6 cars (or more) in a lifetime, you should have at least once built a car on your own, so that you understand the various parts of the engine and etc. so that you can ensure optimal mileage and lifespan.

I built a go-cart with brakes when I was a kid, so I'm good to go.

Oh yeah and cars don't suffer unless you ride the clutch.

Building a car is NOTHING like looking a living thing in the eye and killing it for food.

You're arguing that I should manufacture fiber optic cables before using a computer. Not the same thing at all.

I think it should be expressed that perhaps we should all perform the activites that go into producing what we utilize or consume at least once, so that we can appreciate the value of that which we are invoving ourselves in.

It isn't practical to be responsible for all aspects of everything that we utilize or consume in our lifetime, that is exactly why human beings specialize tasks, but I think the perspective that could be gained from having some experience performing a variety of tasks would be valuable, and would develop our character.

On a side note, chopping wood is quite enjoyable, as is venturing off into the wooded hills to carve up a dead, dry tree and to load it up and take it home to chop it up. The thought of directly providing for one's warmth through the cold winter is an inspiring one. I believe I once created a thread that involved this thought of personally performing the tasks that provide for our existance, and how it would benefit ourselves and society as a whole.

Chop wood, carry water.  :yinyang:

My POV on this is that I will learn to do the things that I am curious about, learn a few other things which I consider basic living skills (whether I am curious or not), and leave the rest to the experts.

If I had to kill, disembowel, skin & bone an animal every time I wanted meat, I would be a vegetarian.  :puke:

I realize that this is hypocritical, I don't like it, and thus have been a vegetarian for about 1/2 my life, off-and-on.  The "off" periods have nearly all been during adulthood, and have corresponded with my developing mild anemia.  It is difficult for me to get enough iron with a vegetarian diet, even with supplementation.

  I struggle with the ideology of this issue, and have yet to find a balance between my convictions and my health.

Definitely. I'm simply stating that the value of the perspective that one would gain from dedicating time to learning about and sporadically practicing the tasks that we usually delegate to others and technology is essential.

The food chain simply is. I'd have to think that there are valid reasons why we are naturally omnivorous. Our body functions as it does and an idealistic sense of how things should be will not mesh with the way things are.

Eh, I'd still be a hypocrite.  "Honey, take this living being out back and turn it into tidy pieces of meat which are unrecognizable as the original living being.  Thanks!"

I really don't like handling and cooking meat, either, even when it comes wrapped in plastic & cut into tidy pieces.

What can I say, I'm an iron-dependant wanna-be vegetarian.

I know that.  I was joking back!

Fireworks_god:  I do see the value in learning how to produce/accomplish for oneself those products/services which we usually purchase ready-made.  I may not want to milk a goat, collect eggs from the henhouse, chop fallen trees into logs, prepare cheese from curdled milk, crochet or sew clothing, etc...on a regular basis, but it is nice to know that I could do so if it was necessary.
