What's with all the slang and abbreviations?

I realize that when talking amongst friends, codewords or slang terms may be necessary, but on message boards and various other places, why are slang terms and abbreviations so abundant amongst the shroomery community?

Why can't we all just love the language we speak?

I wouldn't see why.  I'd think you'd want to specify exactly 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine.

Ja kijk Zoid als we zo gaan beginnen dan begrijpt niemand elkaar meer.

English is my second language, and Internet English requires slang and lingo.

In text chat I use a lot of smilies to help interpret my words. :smile: I learned to do this as it saves one a lot of miscommunication issues.

As to slang and lingo, its more fun that way.

Language isnt something static. Where people gather language is created.

For the record, people who type so bad you are unable to read it. I saw it here a week or three ago from the guy who wanted to try duster on the psychedelic experience boards. Beat them with a fish I say!:fishslap::grammarnazi:
ttyl, WTF, even OMG(it still sounds stupid) are at least understandable. Over using 2 for "to, two, too", usung "u" way too much, butchering words, not using punctuations; all these things are as evil as a slap with a fish.

The reason, and it's not a bad one, that people use slang here is because everyone is stoned.

In holland we call someone Jij (you) or U, which bestows higher honor than Jij.


Hoor je dat?  (can you hear that - among equals)
Hoort U dat? (can you hear that - to someone particularly esteemed)

Oh and LOL means FUN in Holland and has meant just that for over a hundred years.

I wanna know which fuckwit decided that there was one version of english and that it was the only one that was correct.. when you consider english has many different forms, and that these have changed over the centuries, and adopted words from almost every other language..
to say that now it has stopped evolving makes no sense.

Some might call slang a 'devolution'. but as we all know, evolution can lead to higher or lower complexity.

The only purpose of language is to communicate.

The only reason there must be a 'standardised' language is because before the mass-spread of information over the last twoo hundred years, most people would never really whitness writing from scholars or other people across the earth. So they needed to be pedantic about the systems that they used to ensure that the language is not lost.

we dont have to bother with that anymore.. we have access to almost every language and its language rules, all on the net.

Thus if you wanted to publish a peice of work that you wish to last the test of time, you should probably put it into a format that is accepted and standardised.

But if you want to communicate to another human being.. then none of the language rules are as important as the primary one: that the other person gets what you mean

clearly, the abundant use of slang goes to show that in general, slang is an effective form of communication, or else people would never understand eachother. However they keep talking and interacting smoothly so id say people understand eachother perfectly with slang and abbreviations.

and when they dont, someone can say 'wtf does that mean?' and the problem can be fixed.
