aspen pet bedding/ bleach/lime?
    #9522626 -

since i cant get ahold of hardwood sawdust, Im going to give some aspen animal bedding a try.

Ive looked at a few posts, and I was wondering if I needed to bleach/lime/boil etc before use

Dont bleach it. Not sure what posts you looked at, but the recipe is widely used and discussed here.
100 parts sawdust/chips: 10 parts bran: 1-3 parts gypsum (NOT the same as lime), all by weight. 60-70% water (or wet till can barely squeeze a drop from a fistful). Pack into grow bags or jars, and pressure cook for 2 hours.

can I get away with just bathing the straw in bleach, then bagging and adding grain spawn without pressure cooking?

Straw? I thought the thread related to aspen shavings.
----
Straw contams relatively easily as opposed to aspen. (BTW, aspen IS  a hardwood, trees with leaves are usually considered hardwoods; trees with needles are usually considered softwoods).
------
In any case aspen shavings are pretty clean. Those sold at Walmart in 3# packages are sterile. Those at Petsmart in bales are not but I've had no problem with them contaminating.
---
Yes, add bleach and\or add lime to your soak water and you'll be fine. Wood doesn't contam much anyhow. I have never PC'd wood and have never had a contam on wood.
-----
What are you growing?

If you've never PCd your wood and have also never had a contamination, you're not using supplemented substrates.  90% of the wood formulas around here utilize at least one supplement.  There is NO way you'll get around PCing with supplements.

i've had success just pasteurizing my snake's aspen shavings (boiling water poured into bucket with shavings and allowed to sit) and spawning straight to that with WBS for oysters.  you've got to keep it well hydrated though.

what are you trying to grow though?  obviously you may have trouble with something more picky than oysters.

sorry about the non sequitur about straw when I was asking about  bedding. one too many high gravity brews.

i got mixed up because i'm going to try my first bleach bath with straw
when my jars are ready
and i thought i would try some aspen bedding while i was bagging straw
i just didn't know if the bedding was subject to contamination.

i wonder how coffee grounds would work as a supplement with the aspen?
