Emerson anyone?

I was going through my attic and I found my great-grandfather's edition of Love and Friendship by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I thought this was kinda nifty because my great-grandfather was born in the 19th century and I'm curious as to how old the book might be. It was published by the Thomas Y. Cromwell Company and it has a leather cover with gold writing. Any guesses?

Wow that's incredible.  I love Emerson.  If it's an original edition 1841 sounds about right.

Sounds awesome. Emerson is the man. Look up the publisher. If it closed down a very long time ago, that at least gives you a year range. Let us know if you find out. I for one would be very interested to know...

Depending on when your great grandfather died, I'd say it can be as old as the day before that.

Alright, well I've been looking around and my best guess is that it was published sometime between 1860 to 1900. The company published some of Emerson's stuff around 1890 and the descriptions fit my edition. Anyway, I started reading it and I plan on finishing it by tomorrow. The guy was a genius, although I do like Thoreau more... I'll try and post a pic of it if I get a chance.

Awesome, I just found my great-grandfather's version of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, apparently my great-grandfather was quite the hippy.

Funny. I did a thesis paper on the relationship of Emerson and Thoreau and how, although Thoreau has overshadowed Emerson in our time, Thoreau could never have accomplished what he did without Emerson. I mean this not only in the typical literary influence sense, but also materially, spiritually and in a lot of other ways as well. They are pretty inter-connected as writers. Either way, sounds cool. Not that you'd want to sell it, but I bet that is worth at least a couple of hundred bucks...

I wrote a similar paper in an English class over the summer, because they definitely built off of each other a lot... although I didn't find either of them particularly down to earth.  I think they were too idealistic to hold my interest.
