I just got my first DnB gig at a club

I'm spinning dnb for a club for the first time December 26th.  Its very exciting for me, and very scary.  I'm pretty decent, but I've only worked on equipment at my house.  I can put together a good set now, but sometimes it can still be shaky by club standards just because I'm still pretty new to the dj game - but I figure I'll work hard till then and jump in and give it my all.  Plus I have a Kaos Pad built into the mixer, so I think I can put on a fun and unique show.

I know there are some DJ's here... Anybody have a story of their first time spinning at a club, or performing anything for that matter?

My first show was pretty fun, just relax and go with it.

Congrats man!

Best advice I can give is to be comfortable mixing just using the 'phones because the monitors in some places can be a bit shitty, so it's handy to fall back on if you need to.  If you can hear the main speakers over the monitors then you'll get horrible acoustics but you have to remember it sounds better on the dancefloor.  The loud volume in a club will hide minor beatmatching errors pretty well which is good to know. 

It's good to practice a planned set but also be prepared to switch it up if the crowd isn't feeling it.  Planned sets mean quicker mixes because you don't spend ages digging or swapping out tunes that don't sound right.

Definately no harm having a beer or two to calm the nerves and get you in the mood.  The nerves disappear after your first mix and you'll have a blast.

So what style of drum and bass will you be playing?  And what equipment?

I would make sure to talk to the other dj's and check out the setup. Having a bad  monitor situation can be a nightmare.

I would consider ear protection too, dnb dj's always seem to turn up the highs in the booth to match hats and that shits not good for you.

What type of dnb do you play?

All the equipment will be superb quality.  Technics and CDJs with a badass pioneer mixer and Mackie monitors.  I think most everyone else will be using CDJ's, but I've only messed around with them a little bit so I'll be doing an all vinyl set.  I also have a 2 channel mixer with a Kaos Pad built into it which is INCREDIBLE fun to use while mixing.  My friend just got it, so if there is anyway to hook that up I might try to use that.  You can pretty much remix any song on the fly with shpongle-like sounds.

I think I'm going to open the set with a little bit of dubstep & experimental and then go into rollers.  I got some jungle too, but I don't know if I'll play any of that.  Everyone else playing that night will probably be playing really hard style.  I want to see if I can practice someplace that is loud so I can use the headphones better - I usually mix with my ear half off the headphones.

Beer and a wee bit of some kind of party favors will probably show up :smile:

To try and draw parallels to myself I just got a lacrosse coaching gig at a local high school. I'm pretty damn good at playing, but I've never coached.

I figure shit, I might suck this time around, but as I keep doing it I'll get better, and I know what I'm talking about so I should end up as a decent coach.

Keep gettin' gigs and you'll be good.

Since there are other DJ's playing you probably won't need to worry about this but I would make sure somebody has some spare needles and if not, take yours.  I played a gig once where I didn't take needles and the ones at the club kept skipping like fuck on all my mixes, I had to get a friend to run to his house and get his, but this meant like 30 minutes of my set was a nightmare and it sucked.

If you have good headphones, take them too.  My first ever gig I used somebody else's and they were absolutley rubbish, it was like wearing a tin can on the side of my head while somebody hit it with a stick.

Just say, "Pass it to X!" over and over and you'll be good. That's all I remember from hs lax when I played.

Thanks so much for the support!!  I promote and do design work for lots of dnb people so someone just called me up a few days ago and offered if I wanted to play :smile:  I didn't want to at first, but exactly like you said, I figure fuck it.  At least I'll have the experience, and it'll force me to spin every day and get my shit together the best I possibly can.

They'll be playing some jumpup, but probably more hard shit like counterstrike, spor, etc.  Everyone spinning has a different style.  It'll start out lighter and get harder throughout the night.  I'll be playing a new lot of Hospital/Medschool records and hopefully I can throw in a dubstep tune in the beginning because I don't think anyone has EVER played a dubstep track in Gainesville.
