Computer Processor Woes

On my computer, I recently installed a new processor. I upgraded from a Pentium III 655 to a 750 Mhz processor. I was toying with the BIOS the other day, and I must have reset something because instead of displaying 750Mhz on the boot-up diagnostic screen, it now says 550EB. It was registering the true speed for about two weeks prior to the ESCD got cleared

Any ideas how I can fix this so that the actual processor speed is displayed(used)?

Well, if you were in the bios and broke it I would assume if you went back into the bios you might find something about the cpu frequency or the FSB frequency, or the cpu frequency multiplier.  If there is an auto setting maybe you should try it?

How do I adjust the FSB settings and such? My BIOS setup screen is very basic, and there's no place to change the values.

Well, it's obviously been fucked with. Now I need help un-fucking it. I think it was the extended BIOS memory that got cleared. I want to get it to back to saying 750 MHZ instead of 550EB.

just reset the CMOS by either using the jumper that is supplied, or unplugging the computer from the wall, remove the side, pop out the mobo battery for about 30 seconds, reinstall battery and reboot...this will reset your CMOS to default, and cause it to detect the correct speed of your proc.

To get the operating system working again I'd recommend this:

Download a win xp pro image (using torrents), along with a generator for xp pro serials. Get one of the serials, burn the image to a disk, install, use the serial, then get your updates from windiz.com

Bios reset, someone said something about the battery up there, do that but also try holding down the power button with the battery out of it to clear everything out of the motherboard. I've also read that turning the computer on without the batter out as well. If you haven't already tried to reset the bios internally? I'm not sure what your bios is. perhaps look into building a new computer? you can build a pretty decent web computer pretty cheap like under $200.

Save up $300 - 400, and you've got a nice new box you can upgrade later if needed.

I agree on getting a new computer, but I can't afford it right now. And besides, I just put this processor in here. I'd like to get some use out of it (at its full potential) before I'm ready to get a new system.

I tried pressing the power button with the BIOS battery out. I didn't start it without it though.

I have a PhoenixBIOS. I'm unsure of the version, but I can find out. Anyways, there is no setting to change the frequency or bus/multiplier speeds. I'm guessing I need some software tool to change this? Just taking the battery out doesn't seem to be solving the problem here. I must have tried resetting it three times already...nothing changed.

Also, I keep getting notifications that my Virtual Memory is too low, but all I ever use is Firefox. :shrug:

No. If there's no settings in BIOS, it is set with hardware switches on your motherboard. You need your motherboard's manual.

So is there any reason I can't simply find a way to get my processor working at the right speed again? It worked right before, I don't see why I can't get it working again. FOR THE LOVE OF SHROOMS, someone just please tell me the RIGHT thing to do already.

My computer manufacturer didn't think to include a manual for the motherboard. :smirk:

Well... not sure why it was working before and isn't now, but generally when you change the processor you have to change the speed settings on your motherboard. It won't automatically detect the processor's speed. Have a look online and check for a manual. Good luck!
