You'll want to find out what kind of processor your motherboard will accept.

Step 1, figure out what type of system board you have.
Step 2, look up the tech specs of your system board online.
Step 3, identify the socket type and maximum speed cpu the system board can take.
Step 4, buy the fastest cpu that will work
Step 5, make sure your heatsink is big enough for the new cpu
Step 6, buy a new heat sink / fan for the faster cpu (most likely)
Step 7, buy some thermal grease (if it didn't come with the cpu/heat sink)
Step 8, ...

Download Everest Ultimate Edition, it's a pretty good hardware diagnostic program that will, among other things, tell you your motherboard model.

if you have a little extra you may be able go for a new mobo and processor combo, and use all your old graphics, sounds, or other cards and whatnot
