Who Do You Trust?
    #940651 - 10/07/02 05:02 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I am of the opinion that it is unwise to delegate or grant power to those who lust after it. I cannot fathom how anyone in his right mind would want to put someone who desires power in a position of power, in a position where he/she may be able to instigate the enslavement of a population, the unleashing of the dogs of war and/or the destruction of an economy (which could greatly inhibit a peoples means of feeding themselves and their families).

Those who want to have power over us are the least qualified for such a position. Self direction anyone?

Unfortunately our political structure is not formed, as many so naively believe, on representation by the people for the people. Instead it is a nation-wide metaphor of adolescent social positioning. A person who desires power will obtain it because he can work between the lines of the system and make people believe he is the best man for the job. Who is most competent is completely irrelevant. Its very true, the most "popular" political figure is almost without exception not the type of person we'd want to entrust with bagging our grocercies, no less with the leadership of the free world.

hehe, free world, people once said the president of the United States of America was the leader of the free world. How can they say that when American isn't even free anymore?

It's about relative freedom.

I've travelled a bit... I think it's still safe to call America "the land of the free".

the land of the free for those who want to be... but the sad thing is that most of the people are so easily fooled by your government, that they think they have freedom when they are brainwashed day by day...

I am of the opinion that it is unwise to delegate or grant power to those who lust after it.

That is the pretty much the theme of Heinlein's "Glory Road". The position of benevolent dictator for the known universe is filled by someone (a female, in this case) who despises the job and wants nothing more than to be able to resign.

This is indeed the paradox of most current political systems -- those who actually seek out the position of "Head Cheese" demonstrate by their very desire to attain the position that they are not suited to hold it.

The best compromise I have yet seen to this inherent contradiction is that designed by the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Their brilliant paradigm shift was to recast government in the role of bodyguard rather than ruler. Too bad the current American government is but a tattered remnant of that once noble ideal.

What was that line of yours I like so much? Something like "The Constitution is what politicians use to wipe their feet on their way into office".

Lest anyone think this is a Political Discussion topic rather than Spirtuality and Philosophy, the key point here has to do with morality -- what is the moral code and personal philosophy of a US presidential candidate? Does he desire the job because he seeks control over others?

Tom Clancy's book (Executive Orders?) illustrates the principal nicely -- a non-politician is reluctantly persuaded to accept the job of Vice President, then becomes President when the President is killed. As it turns out, he does a better job of it than the professional politicians do.
