Re: Serial Killers?? [Re: WakeboardrB]

I live in Central Va and was in High School during the Beltway Sniper attacks. Even though the shootings we're mostly concentrated in the DC/ Maryland areas, we still got 2 days off of school after they shot that kid while he was walking into his middle school at the morning.

And I was in Ashland a few miles down the road when they shot a guy at the Ponderosa restaurant. I have never seen that many police cars in one area in my life. They had about every road blocked off around the area and traffic was at a stand still on highways for hours and hours.

Same thing happened to me when I played Neil Armstrong in Moonshot. They found me in an alley in Burbank trying to re-enter the earth's atmosphere in an old refrigerator box.

Well good, now we can all sleep soundly.

It's comforting to know that we are devoting so much time and money to these hackneyed "experiments", the results of which are almost invariably the result of confirmation bias.

Really, what better way to determine an individual's psychology than through a fucking questionnaire?

The sheer arrogance of contemporary psychology is just infuriating.  It would be quite a stretch to define it as "the study of the mind" at this point.  Instead, it seems primarily focused on making up a large set of arbitrary "disorders" (they add new ones every year) that can be used as an explanation for any behaviors that are inconsistent with the expectations of society.

I mean, what the fuck is a "sociopath" anyway?  "The essential feature is a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others."  This is now considered a "disorder?"  Keep in mind that the word "disorder" is synonymous with "disease."  From what I can tell, a sociopath is simply a person who doesn't play by the rules.  I'd also like to point that there are no such things as "rights."  They are an arbitrary, made up concept which gives idiots the illusion of security, and can therefore never be "violated."

Also, the hype surrounding neuropsychology is completely unfounded.  Yes, it's great that science has developed a method which allows us to infer correlations between certain behaviors and observable brain activity, but this offers no insight into the nature of subjective, conscious experience, which was initially intended to be the purpose of psychoanalysis.

This recent adoption of neuropsychology by our society as the definitive method for understanding the human psyche reminds me of when scientists first discovered REM sleep patterns and behaved as if they had solved the mystery of dreams once and for all.  Yes, your eyes move around when you're dreaming.  Amazing!  However, this does nothing to explain the utterly bizarre phenomenon of the dream experience itself.  Oh, and who could forget the fanaticism exhibited by the proponents of the idiotic "String Theory?"

Either way, I've accepted that psychology is a lost cause, and will most likely become increasingly absurd with time, but regardless of how many non-existent "diseases" these psychologists are able to pull out of their imaginations, humanns' intrinsic nature will always manifest itself in one way or another.

I don't think it makes me sleep more soundly knowing or not knowing any of this....       And I did purposely put quotes around "sociopathic" and "normal" both - because I personally can't define either....  I don't know if the tests and experiments are biased or not....  If it is real science, it is a collection of unbiased information in order to find the truth - where every "yes" and "no" are both equally as important....

But all things granted, we live in a society, and the majority of the society wants to live within a consensus of certain (arbitrarily?) agreed upon civilized  rights....  Is that not what it is to be a citizen of this country....?    It is a "right", is it not....?  Do you not agree that people should not be separated from the general population after chronically killing for no other apparent reason other than to indulge some personal satisfaction....?    Having a pattern of violating the rights of others is not conducive to "order" (thus the disorder tag  ) which most people seem so willing and/or desperate to grasp hold of....    Is this human nature, or a mere human fantasy never fully realized....?

People are devoting time and money to something, what else is new....?       It is what we do....    :ohwell:    We don't understand it, so we try to understand it the best we can - it is human nature....    Or maybe yet another human fantasy....(?)
