yeah i know its crazy, like every person in the pub think elitest is a negative term, but i've never heard anyone in real life or elsewhere on the internet use it like that except like hardcore anarchy/communism people.

It could be where you live. Where i live calling someone an elitist is consider a criticism. And the concept of elitism is generally frowned upon, although elitist groups do exist. But i live in Australia, so i guess words are used differently everywhere.

–noun
1. practice of or belief in rule by an elite.
2. consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

outside of the pub i've only heard people use the first definition negatively.  outside the pub i've only heard the second definition used positively.

That dude is such a fucking elitist with his music.

To me elitism most often is used when talking about music. Hipsters are elitists. However I'm sure many other paths of life have elitists that are fucking annoying, I'm just not involved with them.

Beer drinkers can be fucking elitist too (apparently I'm becoming one.) To most people, at least most people I know, not identifying with the common person's interests is not a good trait. That's also akin to being an elitist.

Elitists look down on people who don't share their ever so, well, elite views. That's not good. In my experience elitists are fucking assholes (I can be one sometimes too )

yeah i don't know, i just asked my brother and he laughed and said he had never heard the term elitist used negatively either

edit: i don't understand how favoring the elite could be considered negative outside of politics and law.  elite means "the best or most skilled members of a group"

Even though elitist is used often as a synonym of snob, this isn't striclty true.

lol, its on wikipedia, so i guess its not just a weird shroomery, but i notice it did have its own separate little section, and they mention politics alot.

Quote:
Elitism as a pejorative term

The term "elitism" or the title "elitist" can be used resentfully [1] by a person who is not a member of an elite, or is a member but resents the elite position or uses it in a condescending or cynical manner in order to ridicule or criticize practices which discriminate on the basis of ability or attributes. Often, such as in politics, it is used to describe persons as out of touch with the Average Joe. The implication is that the "elitist" person or group thinks they are better than everyone else, and therefore put themselves before others. It could be seen as a synonym for snob. An elitist is not always seen as truly elite, but only privileged. This use is often employed in politics in societies where social equality is valued and the middle and lower classes have political power.

Because the elite are a small group of people. If you are part of the elite, you are part of a clique. The popular people in high school are elite, and unless you were part of that group chances are you didn't like them.

Like I said the elite often look down upon those who aren't up to their standards.

To go back to the music example (and I know I am so guilty of this it's not even funny) if I think what you listen to sucks, and I know what I listen to is good, how is that going to make you feel when I voice that opinion?

Personally I've grown better at explaining that ultimately music is subjective, but many think that if you're not on their level of understanding then you're dumb. Ever read Pitchfork? That's a prime example of music elitism at it's best.

If I said "You guys are elite" then it would have been a compliment, but I said "You guys are a bit elitist".

There's a difference, in Australia anyway.

For example not long, when a mate of mine was asked what bands he listened to, he replied "Oh you wouldn't know them, none you would of heard of" and I replied "ohhh you're so elitist", because he thought his musical tastes to be above and out of reach of the average person.
