What do electronic and techno artists actually do up on stage?

I don't get it. Do they bring in the tracks throughout the performance that are pre-written? Seems like they could get the same effect by just playing pre-recorded stuff and pretending to be doing stuff on stage.

yeah, they mainly play prewritten stuff.  they turn the individual "instrument" tracks on and off, and play around with the effects and stuff.

Some artists will use a keyboard/synth to record some fresh loops each show, but yeah most of the drum loops and such are already set up.  Either way, they keep themselves busy pushing buttons.

They make certain tracks louder/softer and turn them on/off to set up build ups and breakdowns and whatever. I'd assume most, if not all, was already prerecorded but they have all the tools at hand to manipulate it on a whim.

Quite a lot.. they often mix up tracks an create completely new sounds live on stage.. If the dj is a particularly good turntablist then they can rinse the fuck out of a track and make completely different tracks out of it.

They control the crowd man.. haven't you ever been to an electronic music event?

when a dj is on stage, what they are doing, is playing one track, then at the same time cueing up the next track in the headphones (so making them both play at the same BPM, and syncing the beats together).
then once you get the two tracks playing at the same speed, you can seamlessly fade from one track to the next.

now when a dj/producer is playing a live set, they are actually making the music on stage.

I saw Sasha and Digweed at bonnaroo but I wasn't familiar with them so I couldn't tell how they would be improvising. The lights though, that makes it worth it even if it is all pre-recorded and unimprovised. Who controls the lights and how do they synchronize it with the music?

the lights are all controlled by a Lighting technician using a computer

does anyone here do it?  What kind of equipment do you use?  I've always wanted one of those Roland groove boxes to tinker around a little, are they good?

I had a friend that worked the light booth at a venue in Atlanta.  Its pretty cool stuff.  Basically you have to set the tempo of the lights to what the DJ is doing (press a button a few times to match it up), then you have a lot of different preset things you can switch through.  I don't really know... he had a ton of different buttons, levers, and wheels to play with.  Basically he would get paid to eat some X and play with all these lights... what more can you really want from life?

Well some do a lot more than others. Some producers just spin their CDs on CD turntables' others bring their equipment for live performance.

I will say the most live electronic show I have ever been to was Infected Mushroom. They are totally live now, just like a band but with the end result as pounding psy. :smile:

Back in my day those guys were called radio DJs. Picture a  radio DJ playing the next song on the radio but he's all jammin while pressin the button like he's playin an instrument. And there is hundreds of rolling E-tards in front of him cheering like he's a rockstar. It is silly.

i don't know, if it was that easy, there would probably be more good djs.

not to mention you're completely leaving out the selecta aspect.  its the DJs job to have the connections to constantly have the new releases (preferably before they are commercially released) and to keep up without everything thats being produced...

i don't know, i think dj's are pretty important and can be highly skilled.

Check out this. This is a tutorial cosm made it shows how he preforms live. Its really cool and interesting and theres lots of other tutorials on his site, all for free.
