Living on an Island

So anyone that was keeping up with my travel thread might be wondering about how moving to the island is.

In two words: its lousy.

to explain:

I moved to the biggest of the gulf islands; Salt spring island, off the coast of Vancouver BC.

There's roughly 10,000 people here and it quadruples in size in the summer. Its pretty big and rural, downtown is a triangle of 3 streets and there is no traffic light. There's 2 grocery stores, 3 coffee shops, a few restaurants, a yoga studio, gym, sears, general store, hardware store + thats about it. There's a few marinas..

It used to be a draft dodgers paradise, and the hippie vibe is pretty apparent. There's alot of "forest squatters" who call themselves the raccoons, some of them have been squatting for years in pretty rudimentary situations, apperently there's "real life pagans who haven't used money in years", but from what ive seen most of them are sketch bags.

The people are mostly practical, straight up/real + there's lots of artists.

Sadly, salt spring has become yuppied, and the realtors window is filled with $3,000,000 ocean front homes - things are slightly or considerably more expensive as most places cater to tourists..

Everything is really hilly and windy + there are no lights on the roads, people drive crazy + in general its not very good for cycle commuting. Everything is really spread out - luckily hitch hiking is really easy.

There's really nothing to do at all, rent is expensive, transportation is difficult, and most people are rich +/or old.

The work situation is horrible + many people are being forced to leave. I was offered a position at a grocery store, but had already chosen to leave...

Ive been bored out of my mind - no chance of kayaking or sailing in the winter..

The situation i moved into, a friend and his girlfriend - didnt work out at all.

There's jealousy and insecurity issues with her, and in general its not a friendly or fun environment in the home - I polarized their differences.

Not sure where im gonna end up - broke as fuck right now, headed to a camp catering job for a month or so at least, to get some funding and will probably move to vancouver.

I never really realized how important simple things like;

How diversity and hustle and bustle keep things interesting, + how i need public transit.

A city that has;

volunteer oppurtunties, like minded friends/music, radical people doing radical things, public transit, options of where to buy things, a climbing gym...

KEY to happiness.

Yeah I fucking hate those yuppies.

Now they are buying up farm land in Saskatchewan, driving the prices up. Even though most of them can't tell canola from broccoli and couldn't even grow a fucking garden, they are so fat and lazy. In the meantime someone like me who actually wants to farm can't afford land now.

It really sucks man. I almost think I would join a cultural revolution to just kill everyone over 50 years old, they have fucked up the housing situation so badly for young people like myself in western Canada.

Yeah its too bad how that happens. Same thing was happening on Commercial drive in vancouver about 5 years ago ... Rents were going sky-high because of yuppies buying into the cool/hipster area of town.

Gah.

Surprised yuppies are interested in land in Sask. though..

They just rent it out to actual farmers. It's like a status symbol so they can say "yeah, I got a farm in Saskatchewan"

It's like this. Say I wanted to make some money, so I bought a steam cleaning machine. These can be found for around 50 grand and mounted to a truck. You can make money at this fairly easily, especially around the oil fields where they need steam cleaners. You will make good money doing this.

Now to buy a good quarter section you are looking at 200 grand at least, but it is much more difficult to make money on it than a steam cleaner. So in terms of financial investment it is not a good one, no matter how you look at it. Assuming you have no experience at all farming, this is a terrible investment, period.

So why have prices gone up so fast? Talking with my uncles and dad who are farming background they say it is people who don't even farm who buy it as an "investment" lol. In other words the buying of farm land for no reason drives the price up, which gives the illusion that it is a good investment.

It will all crash eventually but in the meantime people who actually want to farm are fucked over.

There's plenty to do on Salt Spring. It's just one of those places you have to make your own fun, or at least put a little effort in.
