bury pereskiopsis graft
    #9221246 -

Was thinking, could you bury a grafting stock so the scion is at soil level. Therefor the cacti would also grow its own roots and not need to de-grafted? Would this work the way i think it would?

Hmm. Sounds like a recipe for rot.

that works well for many, but nto pereskiopsis cause they like wet *soil* not dry rock...like Mankey said, they rot (i have done them, pointless)

if they are other stocks that get planted in similar substrate as the scion, then it works very well.

so they will take up more water and swell and rot. Makes since. So maybe a myrtle or something like that would be a good permanent base root stock.

I have one that's been buried like this for over a year with no rot, but i keep it fairly dry.

no.  if you cut it the scion will be touching the soil....and pereskiopsis needs more water than a lophophora.....its like wearing a wet sock all day everyday, your foot is going to rash, but the scion will rot.

like you say, if you can dry without dehydrating the pereskiopsis, it should work ok....but easy to fuck up.

Your graft would also grow slower because you'd have less surface area working for photosynthesis.

How old is the graft?
If it is well scabbed over, maybe instead of burying the stock so that the scion is at soil level, you can instead keep it as is, and bury up to the graft with pea gravel or chunks of limestone. This way, all of the water drains right through the rock and into the soil, yet the graft will appear to be growing on its own roots.
And maybe the graft will root like this?

I think i will layed the graft, plant pereskiopsis in soil, then layers of gravel and large rocks. Should look very nice i think.
