Told you so. :crazy2:

I have bad knees and ankles too. I've been hopping on my apartments eliptical once in a while and running once in a blue moon for some scenery.

If I run for excersize I have to make sure its only on grass, cuz dirt or concrete dont pad the joints.

I already wake up early for work Mon-Fri... so I've taken up running in the evening! Used to run back in the day... but recently started again. First run was 2.5 miles!

I finally worked up to 2.5mi without any walking breaks (i had been previously taking 15second breaks when it got too intense) which I do after my bodyweight workouts.

Cool, I congratulate you.

I have either run or power walked (with or without heavy hands) up a mountain side at about 5 to 6 am for one hour, for the last twenty years without missing more than a handful of days.

Pretty crazy huh?

I made it about halfway through this thread, so I apologize if I missed what I'm after, but I have a question for you guys who run everyday. Can your body maintain the stresses associated with daily running? I LOVE to run, and for awhile I was running 2-5 miles at least 3x a week. But after awhile it just starts killing me. My knees, shins, and lower back will start casting hate on me with every additional step. For awhile I just ran through the pain, because a run in the morning makes such a radical improvement on my day that it's still worth it.

But finally I had to throw in the towel, and took up mtn biking for awhile. I like that too, but it's just not the same. It takes a lot longer to reach the same level of exertion and doesn't utilize as many muscles, which essentially translates to a less fulfilling exercise. I would much rather run, but I seriously have a hard time moderating my desire to run. It sounds kind of counter-intuitive maybe, especially for people who can't seem to make it out of bed in time for a run, but it's seriously awesome for my mental health and self-esteem. I eat better, sleep better, I can focus better, I'm more motivated, outgoing, happier, stronger, etc.

My question is, how do you deal with the stresses of frequent running? Does it help to have good shoes? Good style? Any tips?

glucosamine helps a bit, and running on soft surfaces with good shoes helps, but really you just need to let your body heal itself before you perpetuate damage. i don't know how these marathon runners stay in one piece.

Groc:
I ran 5 days a week until 2 months ago.  I work 14 hour days on my feet.  I had foot pain to say the least.

Other than that my body felt great-  The first 3 or 4 days are painful but once I make it through that, its pretty much smooth sailing.

I run on hard surfaces, roads/sidewalks.  I try to get onto the grass as much as possible, but i would say 90% of my time is on hard surface.

If you're having back problems it's most likely you're shoes.  Buy a nice pair of running shoes and even some Dr Scholls.

I feel so much better and i'm only on day 2 of my routine, like you said you feel better, eat better, sleep better blah blah.

I just quit smoking this summer after 16 years and began to run. It is a pain in the ass and I give up on it every now and then (currently this is my third consecutive day sitting on my ass). I feel like returning to smoking because it kept me thin and made me feel good. I have been gaining weight (20 lbs. now) and can't seem to lose any. I have to work on my diet.

Running does make me feel good but smoking is so much easier. I am glad I found this thread. Maybe I'll get there one day but for now it's a struggle. Off and On and lack of energy and being fatigued. I can die of being overweight, die of smoking, or press on with running. I bike too. I can't run more than 2 miles but can easily bike 10. I'm 32 and my body is a wreck. As are my lungs haha:). Slowly but surely, steady and swiftly.

Just run.  Think of how nice it feels when you finish a long run.

I've been running to the pier down the road, 3x now, 2nd day consecutive today.

Now i have running shoes, and no job + a desire to discipline and balance..

No excuses really.. Hopefully ill keep it up, 8-9am is the earliest you'll see me out there though, cant run in the dark no light on these dark twisty and hilly roads.

However today, i hurt my knee - gah! hope it doesn't fuck up my run tommorow.

I dont run fast, but slow and over an hour, adjusting pace according to how i feel..

I feel like a goof, im 23, have a mullet and dreads hangin' off the back of my head, and tattoos - not yer typical runner! - i want to do a marathon in the next year or so though...

It was good reading about why people run, and their difficulties.

Good thread!

It's getting COLD guys...how are you guys handling running in the cold mornings? I live in New England...

I'd like to start doing this, but any suggestions for clothing that keeps me warm but that I can run in?

I know you can get a women's version of this Under Armour thing. My sister has one. Keeps you pretty warm.

Long underwear, sweat pants, wool socks, turtle neck, t-shirt over the turtle neck, fleece jersey, tobaggon.  Layers work better because you can remove the jersey and tie it around your waist if you start getting hot. If it is icy cold a very long scarf that I can tie around my face and move as I get warmer.  The hybrid glove, mitten things.

Definitely layers.

You can do it.  You know why you are gaining weight, only you can attack that problem.  Just get out there and move.  Even if you don't feel like running take a walk.  You are aware,Keep you're head up, it feels good

Try going to EMS or look online for hiking pants, I have the luxury of running at 11:30 in the morning so I have not had to wear pants yet.  When it does get cold I just plan on using my hikng pants though, they seem to work.  Also as already stated just couple of light layers.  Remember you are going to be running, so within 2 minutes you will be hot, no need for a coat (IMO).  If it is REALLY cold I will probably just not run that day

My left knee had been acting up and it is still giving me problems. I can run on it, but it does tend to hurt. After I ran a mile it quit hurting but then began hurting again after my run. I've sprained it many times as well as done tons of typical damage to it when I was a kid; and had 3 stitches to close a big gash in my kneecap (on the bone).

I don't know if I should continue. I stopped running because my knee started hurting. The pain is tolerable but I am concerned I may be causing more damage to it. I can run through the pain but I hope I am not creating some unforeseen malady that shall afflict my insolent ass down the line.

I also ride me bicycle but the intensity level of a run just ain't there. Any suggestions on other exercises besides running/bicycling? I will continue running though unless my knee becomes too much of a hindrance. I miss and liked being skinny. Maybe I'll just take up smoking again blahaha!:stoned:
