Astrologically Compatible
    #9210153 -

So im probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. Maybe i just want someone to tell me that its not a big deal.

Anyways.....My girlfriend and I have been dating for sometime now. We are polar opposites, yet somehow we make it work. I like to think of it as Ying and Yang.

But out of curiosity, i wanted to see how compatible we are in the universe's eyes.

Here are the Facts: Im a Libra and she is a Virgo. There are slim chances, but there are chances.

Just because our signs aren't compatible doesn't mean we aren't. Right???

I'd say you two will get along fine if you let things happen. Don't let some astrological superstition ruin what could turn out to be a great relationship.

there's a lot more to it than just that.  it's not just what constellation is behind the sun at the day of your birth... but also what constellation is behind the moon and all of the planets.  the moon represents a unique aspect of your character.. and same with each of the planets.

so in other words, the position of the sun is libra for you... but you could however be a virgo as far as mars is concerned or maybe some other planets too... and it could work the same way for your lady friend as well, and astrologically speaking you could be more compatible than you realize.

i don't know too much about it really..

i'm kinda new to all of it and i'm still skeptical :paranoid:... but sometimes it can really be startlingly accurate.  makes me think of how alan watts referred to it as being a good idea, but just "too crude" of a map.

but the fella that introduced me to it made a decent point when he said, "do you deny that the moon has an effect on the tides of the ocean?"

i replied, "hm.. no."

he said, "well what are you mostly made of?"

"water.."

"ok, then is it that far fetched then to assume that if planetary bodies can have an effect on earth, that they can affect us as well seeing that we are comprised of the same elements"

anyways..

if you're interested in doing a full chart, check this site out and see how many common signs you and your girlfriend share.

oh, and strangely enough i'm also a libra and dating a virgo... and everything is splendid  ..if that's any consolation.

All I know is, a good friend of mine who was into that sort of thing many years ago warned me to stay away from Gemini girls.  I'm starting to think she was right.

If that was the case then wouldn't your moon sign be more important than your sun sign?

It's fucking ridiculous.  You're experiencing cooincidences that you're looking for.

A fun thing to do is to ask somebody their star sign, read out a different one, wait for them to go "OMG that's SOOOO accurate", then laugh at them and say it was the wrong one.

It's pure psychology not some superstitous bullshit about star formations.  And that moon / water idea is the most vague excuse for a scientific theory I've heard in my entire life.  If you're going to start believing complete nonsense then at least provide yourself with some sort of intelligent reason before you let it alter life-changing decisions.  I mean really.

not necessarily... even though the moon effects the tide, it's the sun that gives life to the water.

hm.. not only dismissive... but hostilely dismissive..

so, i'm probably wasting my time..

but, if you look around this planet, you'll see that it's all interconnected, and that everything depends on everything else.  and i'm not so sure that it just stops there, but maybe it continues on, on a cosmic scale.  it might be hard to fathom, but if our entire planet is interconnected than what if the entire universe is connected in the way our planet is, but we just can't physically see the effects, or if we can, we are too blind to see them.

and i never said the moon/water water bit was a scientific theory... i said it was a decent point...

you use science the way a born-again christian uses the bible.

But astrology claims to be able to see the effects. If the effects cannot be seen, or predicted, then what's the point of astrology?

If it's not scientific then it's not a decent point, it's pure conjecture.

I'm all for interconnected-ness.  But I still fail to see what, in the grand scheme of the cosmos, the alignment of the planets has to do with your love-life.

Are there any blind experiments which demonstrably show that astrologers can make accurate predictions?  Or do they just profit from the fact that deep down we are all much more alike than we like to believe?

Ever see that Derren Brown show where he wrote 2-page essays about a good few volunteers he had never met before and most of them were shocked at how much he seemed to know about their personality and how accurately he described their hopes and dreams?  Then he lifted the facade of the supernatural and told them they had all been reading the exact same essay.

Sorry if I cam across hostile.  I think that horoscopes are generally harmless but it's the mindlessness of the entire scene, running in the same vein as organised religion and spiritual mediums that pisses me off.  If you're willing to put forward plausible arguments about why you think astrology might work then let's have a discussion about it.

I think that's the only reason why they're tolerated - they're generally harmless. However if someone claimed they could cure your cancer by tailoring treatments to your star sign it'd be time to bring down the banhammer.

Well

Someone who I was astrologically compatible with turned out to be my total opposite in every way possible, and we're now getting a divorce, so I would be more concerned about not having anything in common with someone then astrological signage.

At first I liked having someone around who was my opposite, but as the years droned on, it just wasn't working and the differences continued to widen as we each grew up.  I see now that I need someone that resonates closely with who I am in my heart and soul.

Well said. I've always thought the whole "be with your opposite because they'll complement your personality" idea was bogus.

i may be just as skeptical as the lot of you, but at the same time i try to keep an open mind rather than being so dismissive.  honestly... i'm hardly the best candidate to argue on astrology's behalf...

but to say if it's not scientific than it's pure conjecture is silly...  so you mean to say that everything you've experienced in life has had a scientific explanation?  science is examining one brick in a wall that is infinitely high.  the best of scientists revel in the unknown... but based off of what you said it seems you have a fear of the unknown, and you use science to give yourself a false sense of security in the same way a stereotypical christian misinterprets the bible to fit his/her own narrow ideas.  the world is full of mystery and unknowns... why be so dismissive and act like you have it all figured out in the name of science?

i have seen that video, somebody posted it in this forum not too long ago.  to me what that proves is that people are fools more often than not... rather than the illegitimacy of astrology.

and i'd have to agree with you that there is a lot of phoniness and mindlessness about it all... with all the new-agey nonsense and pseudo-spirituality..

but it seems to me that you are more at odds with it's followers than astrology itself.

..should you not listen to the beatles anymore because squares enjoy the music too?

i think daily horoscopes are bunk... the sort you find in trendy magazines..  those are about as useful as the fortune in fortune cookies.

but, i think there is something to the aspects of the signs themselves...

for example, my ma is a leo, and all the characteristics of a leo sum her up pretty accurately, but if i were to try and match her up with the characteristics of a libra... it just doesn't fit at all.

and that's more or less the case with everybody i've checked out in my family and circle of friends.

so at what point does it stop being a coincidence?

but, yeah even still it's much to vague... but i guess it can be used as a very crude guide as to getting some insight into an individual's character.  it's not just what sign they were born under but also how they were raised.. etc.  there are a lot of different factors that make up somebody's personality, but maybe your sign is the foundation that your personality is built upon?

I was responding to your claim that the statement "we are made of water, moon controls water" is a good point. I say it is not a good point. My reason is that that statement is attempting to rationalise astrology using scientific logic (physical phenomena), and if you attempt to use science you have to expect skepticism. That statement is not backed up by any sort of evidence; it's purely hocus-pocus conjecture wrapped up in a veil of pseudoscience. That is why it's not a good point.

There might be a grain of truth behind astrological personality types, just due to the fact that a mother's diet varies on a seasonal basis and the personality of the developing fetus could be affected by this.

People born in March have the highest risk for schizophrenia, for instance.

Yeah the winter birth phenomenon.

In fact, knowing what we know now you could probably design a new astrology system that takes those things into account. It would be different to the current one though, because the current one has no correlations with observed phenomena.

I agree that daily horoscopes are complete and utter bullshit, but how do the personality types according to sign play out?  Does anyone have any links where these have been debunked by correlational psychological personality tests?

I matched extremely well to a thread on here about male Pisces (I was born in March): http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6422921#Post6422921 and I haven't matched the written description of the other signs, as far as I'm aware from a limited Wikipedia-ing of the subject.

Probably all hokum, but it's fun to play around with regardless.

it's not that i don't accept skepticism... i admitted that i'm skeptical about all of this as much as anybody else... but to me there is a difference between skepticism and blatant dismissal.

i'm not even trying to use science either... people were aware of the effects that the moon had on the tides long before the word science was even coined.

and i referred to that statement about the tides as being a decent point because it made me put my skepticism aside momentarily and consider astrology in a different light.  that's all... i never said, "hey, here is a new theory that is scientifically accepted world wide that i just quoted from the latest issue of science journal weekly..."

does everything have to be proven scientifically before you can move forward in a conversation?  when your mother tells you she loves you do ask her to write it out in the scientific method and get back to you?  what ever happened to humoring one another for the sake of argument? or hypothetical situations?

like i said before, i'm not astrology's staunchest supporter... i just think it's interesting to consider, even if just for a moment.
