Bill hicks joke

The pun in his JFK assassination joke where 'there were rumors of anti-castro pigeons drinking in a bar that day, people overheard them saying 'coup', 'coup'...

I am not getting the pun here... anyone help clarify this?

Coup - pronounced "coo" which is the sound pigeons make. Coup also means military takeover of government.

It's referring to the fact that the CIA was trying to stage a coup on Castro, and that the assassination was possibly a retaliation.

From the book Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA.  Which is a very intriguing read. 

I can look up specifics if you really want.
