Pew Research: “Rush Limbaugh,” “Hannity & Colmes” Listeners Best Informed About U.S. Politics
October 18th, 2008 by Matthew Vadum

The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press tested the political knowledge of 3,612 U.S. adults and found that the audiences of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity with Alan Colmes were the best informed about U.S. politics.

On two questions that asked respondents to identify the majority party in the U.S. House of Representatives (Democrats) and to identify the current U.S. secretary of state (Condoleezza Rice), “Hannity & Colmes” viewers scored 84% and 73% respectively. Among Rush Limbaugh listeners, the scores were 83% and 71%.

On a question involving international affairs in which the respondents had to identify the prime minister of the United Kingdom (Gordon Brown), 59% of readers of The New Yorker and the Atlantic got it right, compared to 57% of NPR listeners.

I wonder what the samples of each "group" looked like in terms of demographics, and whether the data were corrected for these differences.

Age is the first confound that comes to mind

Why should they be corrected for anything when it is a simple question.  Who is most informed.  Period.  Oh, I already did that.  Never mind.

Ya, they're not getting a random sample.  The sample IS the watchers of the programs, whose demographics will be different.

They should have asked questions about the Constitution. That's a bit more important than the questions asked.

Well, obviously they would have to have seen or heard the show since samples are determined on whether they saw or heard the show.  Holy fucking shit is this the state of education in American?

Do you think that would have made a difference?

If the substance of the study is to determine the difference in informedness (made up word, I know) among listeners of various shows why would you bother to measure any other factor?  Is dick size relevant?  No.

I honestly have no clue. I think both sides would be wrong on some things based on their pre-existing beliefs of what should be.

That sounds exactly like what I was trying to say.  I guess you just misunderstood me.

So if the demographics are completely different, than what do you think accounts for the difference in "being informed about U.S. politics?"

I bet viewers of Hannity and Combs are more likely to own a gun.  So are owners of guns more likely to be informed about U.S. politics?

The same study found that viewers of the Colbert Report were more likely to have a college degree.  Are people with college degrees less likely to be informed about politics than viewers of Hannity and Combs and Limbaugh?

I bet viewers of Hannity and Combs and Limbaugh are more likely to go to church than others.  Are chuchgoers more informed about politics than others?

These are the problems that arise when making conclusions after comparing entirely different groups.  Its the reason why we correct for difference when doing so.  Its basic science.

Maybe.  Why don't you do a study asking that?

Basic science.  They asked a question and got data.  You asked other questions and got nothing because you didn't do the work.  Who gives a fuck?

Anyone else notice that there is no link to the actual Pew study in that story, or that of the links that are there, many connect you to completely irrelevant information?  The "Democrats," link connects to a story claiming Republicans are happier than Democrats, and the "perfect scores," link at the bottom connects to a story about the myth that swallowed gum takes seven years to digest.  WTF?

So anyway, I went down to Pew Research and found the study myself. (link) The data presented on Pew's own page shows that the people who are most informed in total, are those who read the New Yorker or Atlantic, listen to NPR, or watch Hardball.  Also, despite the spin presented here, the conclusion that the report was trying to make was that it isn't one's politics that make one more or less likely to answer the questions correctly, but rather their level of education.

For the sake of argument, here is another study conducted by Pew in April 2007, with a very similar topic.  According to the results of that poll, which asked much more detailed questions about American politicians and current events, the people who demonstrated the highest level of knowledge were among the regular audience of the Daily Show/Colbert Report, major newspaper's websites, and the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.  This study also concluded that the primary factors in how well a person answers the questions are age and education, not political affiliation or location.
