Nah, its the humidity thats makes it so extreme.  I commonly work in temps over 110 and have worked in temps as high as the mid 120s at times.  I also go camping in Death Valley in the middle of summer (I like it because theres not as many people) and I usually dive around with the windows open rather then turning on the air.  Heats never been an issue to me.

But what makes that cave so dangerous is the humidity.  Its right at about 100%.  The cave was actually full of water until it was recently discovered and drained out by the lead/silver mining operation.  If man hadn't drained the water a couple years ago when they dicsovered it it would still be full.  Although they keep the water pumped out right now the whole place is still wet all the time and the humidity in the air is as high as it can be.  This reults in an environment where the human body has no way to cool itself.  With humidity that high there can be no evaporation of sweat and the body loses all ability to dispell excess heat.

I just always remember this picture over at Erowid.  I've wondered if the pic is valid, or even possible. But I don't care...I like it! :grin:

Yeah I believe it mentioned in the article the crystals formed underwater and their growth was halted when the mine inadvertently lowered the water table in the area.

Yes, the cave was flooded before it was discovered in a working mine in Mexico I think....
The crystals are Gypsum (also known as Selenite), and form under water (in a saturated solution) at 120 degrees to grow like 1mm per year....
The cave is basically a huge geode....

Two guys working in the mine found it back in like 2000, it was just recently they had a program on one of the Science channels about it....
I was quite disappointed in the program myself.... 
They showed WAY too much of the orange suited scientists, redundantly repeating how dangerous it was for them to be there -
instead of focusing on the crystal structures and formations - THAT is what I wanted to see....    :thumbup:

It would be cooler to find a big cave/geode like that with huge water clear Beryl Aquamarine crystals (maybe a little Muscovite thrown in for contrast)....    :thumbup:


A cave made out of Marcasite crystals would be sweet too....  :grin:
