Mixing, Equalizing, Mastering ?

So I really want to get good at this...

Basically, (and I just use fruityloops right now) I just fuck with the low, hi, and mid frequencies on each channel till it sounds "okay", but I've never really attempted to do something of high quality.

I know there is this huge subtle spatial aspect of sound I simply have very little command over, and it feels like I'm poking around in the dark. 

I'm a good listener.  I listen to high-quality mastered music and I can seperate out alot of different voices and how theyre behaving.. just seems like a huge endeavor to get that sort of control, so maybe I can get some tips before wading in on my own.

so just wondering if anyone has some advice, stories, links, books, software/tools advice, etc.  would love to hear it :smile:

"Critical listening and Audio perception" by F. Alton Everest. It runs about 300 bucks but it is worth every penny. :rastamon:

Mixing, EQ, Mastering IS allot of work. Get a simple Protools set up, and go from there.....IMO there's no better teacher than yourself.

you are asking questions that are on par with "how can I play golf as good as tiger woods?".
making good sound isnt something you can read out of a book... it is an art and being an art it is something only refined through years of experience/trial and error once a solid technical foundation has been learned.

I find that about every 6 months I think back to how I used to mix and kind of chuckle... been doing that for the last 6 years now.

what I find is wrong with most home studios and their proprietors is that they try to skip over a lot of basics because they think they actually know shit about how audio works.
if you dont know how a dynamic microphone works, you wont be able to understand proper microphone placement and technique.
There is a saying in the live industry that says "output is a function of input".

I have so many friends ask me to help them "polish" up their cd's, but even the best engineer in the world cannot fix what is ultimately a flawed foundation. Here is another saying in the live and recording industry " try to polish a turd and you end up getting shit everywhere".
in recording, tracking is the most vital aspect. it is just like any other media: if you are a director of a film, how hard is your job going to be if you have only one take of everything? if the lighting is all wrong?
just becuase everyone got their lines right doesnt mean it is a proper take.

and once you actually learn about microphones, then you need to learn about proper amplification and gain staging, proper dynamics, gates, audio compression, the nyquist theorum, data compression, data conversion and audio conversion, dither, white noise, pink noise, harmonic distortion, psychoacoustics, phasing, grounding/shielding, solid state electronics, ohms law.....

and then maybe you are ready to introduce yourself to limiting, reverb and equalization.

so not to leave here with a stern talking down to... here is something fun to play with.
all microphones have the capacity to be omni microphones. the majority of microphones are some variation of a cardioid pick up pattern, they acheive this pattern through phase rejection.


this is the best microphone in existence. due to its price, durability, and having probably the widest versatility of any mic, it would be better to have 50 of these in a studio than an assortment of extremely expensive neumann condenser microphones.
if you dont have one, then go spend 80 bucks and get one... maybe sell that POS Electro voice radio shack mic that you have.

see the picture? right where the capsule meets the body/casing of the microphone is where the SM57's phase rejection is. wrap some tape around that tiny gap and you have yourself an omni microphone capable of picking up in every direction.
lets say you want to record your bands practice session for reference and playback later.... just put that bitch on a mic stand in the middle of the room point directly upwards and you will be able to hear every instrument with enough clarity... if the room is a small garage or room, or picking up too much of the drum kit then wrap the mic in a t-shirt or some cloth like a blanket.

Hey man, you might be able to help me with something...I want an electonic feel to drums, but I'm using an acoustic kit. So far I've been recording top/bottom snare...plus a condenser 45cm under the snare to catch a little more of the wire's. Light high hats/Heavy hats, and using effects like bit converters, time stretch, phasing the mics on purpose with the hats.  I'm just trying to not make the kit sound, 'acoustic' as such, because I'll be overlaying multiple drum tracks and I don't want it to mash to much.

Is there any suggestions you have?

record them somewhere where there is no reverberations. which is tough/ you either need a seriously absorbent/dead room or an open field.
"live" feeling is pretty much reverb.

then once you have your dead sounds, gate the shit out of them, compress the shit out of them, and convert them using a low sample rate that mimics the kind of sound you want... meaning the lower you go, the more electronic they are going to sound.

still you might run into problems... no matter how good you are at phasing out pickup you are still going to have bleed through from the other mics.
meaning that when you hit the snare the hi hat mic will pick it up.

still my suggestion might work good enough for what you are going for... otherwise you can individually record each drum/cymbal in a regular room but gate it as tight as possible.
but then you would need a drummer with stellar dynamics.

Also look for a book called "Mixing With Your Mind" for an excellent esoteric approach.

I have an acoustically dead studio for use, so that's not a prob. And I've been playing drums for 15yrs.

I've been recording the main beat, then laying extra electronic lines over it. I use allot of household noises as percussion too so it's a challenge mixing it all tight.
