Proud father of 8 (update: pics)
    #8890237 -

Cyphotilapia Frontosa!

An African rift lake (Tanganyika) cichlid. I received ~10 babies from my job at a pet store about 7-8 years ago. A gentleman in his late 80's dropped off his harem saying they would outlive him and his kids wouldn't be able to take care of them properly.

I've always thought I had only males. Only 3 have made it, the largest male being 7-8" and the only female being ~5". So a few weeks ago, I looked at what I thought was the smallest male and 'his' jaw looked funky.

They occasionally lip-lock for territory and to flaunt their strength, so I assumed he was down for the count. Lo and behold, 'he' began tumbling eggs around in her mouth, and I saw pairs of eyes 2 weeks ago. Told myself by Labor Day that I'd "strip" her of the young (dunking her in water so she'd release them safely). One of the peacocks was stalking out her territory and I think may have gotten some.

They've gone from half an inch to an inch or more in the last week. Just did their first water change and they're taking it very well. They're beginning to feel comfortable in mid-water and are going to the surface more often now. They're pimping their own 10 gallon bare bottom tank.

Female looks pretty much exactly like this:

the most dominant male looks like:

Digital camera decided to die last night (great!). Snagging a new one today and will post pics of the young. They are downright beautiful and definitely an unexpected blessing. I didn't want to post them last week since I was afraid of something happening. They are incredibly hardy already.

After breeding everything from livebearers, tetras, angelfish and discus, I've got to say this is the most rewarding experience in my fishkeeping career.

So much for this...

Quote:
A mouthbrooder the Frontosa is a little more selective than most and the ratio of three to one is needed to form a proper pair.

I  my fishies.

Kudos man; I'm envious! I used to have a couple oscars, and I've always wanted a tank of cichlids.

You definitely need to get more pictures up of your setups and everything. :super:

Sweet.  I really miss my tank.  Haven't kept fish in about 7 years now.  I might buy another house soon and if I do I'm gonna invest in another nice setup.

Congrats on the successful breeding!

Oh. You're talking about fish.
I read, "A gentleman in his late 80's dropped off his harem saying they would outlive him and his kids wouldn't be able to take care of them properly"
and got excited. Damn. Still, a harem of fish is better than no harem at all, right?
Those things eat little fishys for breakfast right?

Nice man! Glad to see we have another fish person on the boards.

What size tank do you have those frontosas in? They get pretty massive.

You should be able to make a pretty penny on those fry too. The store I worked at was selling 3 inchers for $20 each if I remember correctly.

It's just a 55g tank, I fell out of the hobby for years, and it's basically been maintenance and "let things happen" for about 3 years. I don't plan on moving them up to anything bigger.. they've been in it so long.

I'm hanging onto the fry. It's making me wonder when the old guy got his, if he's still around, how long he had them, etc. I'd like to keep the bloodline going. When they get bigger, I'm doing a new 55g, and I may take the "dive" into a 125g for them all.

I've got a 20gL plant tank with anubias, java fern, and a few mollies (3 have given birth in the last week). Girlfriend loves the tank, loves the babies, and it really makes the room.

A 29g angelfish tank with anubias nana and barteri, a bit of extra java fern, and some neons. Another "let things happen naturally" tank. Recently, two paired up and laid eggs, but it was the female's first birth and she didn't know what she was doing. I didn't want to pull the eggs. I lost the male during a power outage.

The setups are really nothing special. I'm losing a lot of plants in my 29g angel tank and I don't know why.. I think diatoms are the culprit. This is the tank at its peak.

Congratulations, Those guys are usually hard to breed (when you are trying I guess). They should make you some money, either that or trade in for other fish.
I'm going to have to get some pictures of my African tank, I have mostly tangs but I have a couple Malawi species in there too.

Here are some of my Tangs, there are more pics in my gallery.  I wish it were easier to get a good picture with these things.  You pretty much have to sit there high as fuck till they flex on the camera.

well, occasionally.  That is what I get for trying to keeping smaller fish in a tank full of carnivores.

They bred again last night

I guess big papa can't get enough of that sweet 'tang'.

The other babies are doing great. Haven't lost any at all and they're very active, eating nearly 6 times a day. Slowly adjusted their pH and hardness and they're already very colorful. They're taking the 3 day water changes in stride.

Now if these guys keep it up, I'm going to run out of room. I'm already eyeing space for a new 55g and the gf doesn't know my intentions yet

i dont know about that particular cichlid, but oscars and a few other cichlids have become an invasive scourge here in florida.  i fucking hate those fish.  they eat every fish in sight that they can, and they destroy the native habitats.

i have no problem with people having them as pets, but the people that throw them into lakes and canals when they get too big really piss me off.

Very neat! Congrats. Aren't those species capable of changing sex within a strictly male or female population?

Pisses me off too. Years ago someone let a snakehead loose in the park's pond. All the fish were gone in a matter of a 2-3 months (maybe there was more than one?). They decided to dredge/drain the pond and start anew :frown:  No more turtles and fun bugs and all the stuff I enjoyed as a kid, just staple fish.

And no, they don't change sex

Ah yes, fish jokes . I bet that went right over a lot of people's heads. I got it  :super:

Oh yeah, lefty, you guys have other fish in Florida that cause much bigger problems. There was a population of Hoplias malabaricus, aka freshwater Wolf Fish, in a river near Tampa for a long time. Not sure if they're still there.

Those guys get about 3 feet long... They're beasts.

Those wolf fish or the shit.  I want to get one, but I don't know if I want to dedicate a great big tank for just one fish.

They are pretty slow growers in my experience.

Erythrinus erythrinus, the rainbow/hi-fin wolf fish, grows even slower and looks a hell of a lot cooler. Might want to check them out. The one I had was even more nasty than the "real" wolf fish. They're a lot more active too.
