Huge mistake, stuck and lost in the real world.
    #9022808 -

I was a smart kid, got the best grades I could possibly get in the courses I had chosen. I got accepted to university but because I didn't have the math credit I needed it was to some random program that was only slightly related to what I choose. Also at the time I was very messed up mentally, I was in a deep depression that made me very anti social. This had pretty much been going on for all of high school. I decided that this program was not for me and I was not yet ready for university. My plan was to work and get some extra cash then apply the next year for a program I wanted and in addition fix my social problems and get in shape. Well I got in shape, and fixed my social problems over the summer. Started partying and interacting with girls and pretty much being happy.

Getting a job however was not so easy, I must have applied to over 20 places in the summer. I got one job that I worked for 2 days and didn't get called backed to because I was too slow. I now am still attempting to get a job but I realized this job thing ain't for me. I just suck at it, for some reason I thought my good grades meant it would be easy to get a job. I was horribly wrong, and now I'm stuck without a job, without school... oh how I miss school, things were so easy, teachers were so understanding.

I guess my only option is to keep looking for a job? Well fuck I'm tired of looking, people all around me get jobs to the first place they apply to while I have to apply to every fucking ad I see. I feel like I am slowly turning into a bum. I don't even feel smart anymore these days because I havn't been using my brain lately. I'm going down the wrong path and its frustrating like hell! The real world is such a fucked up place, I just want my secure and safe school system back :frown:. I realize I'm gona have to keep looking for a job for now, because I need that cash, but what else can I do? I wana become something important in this world and I know that just sitting around and looking for jobs isn't gona help me do that.

It's okay, man.  Just keep up what you're doing.  Enjoy the adventure of "looking" for now, since that's where you're at.

Are you joking?  You have to start somewhere in life.  Read a book or something to feel smarter.

Welcome to the real world.  Take it as a blessing in disguise.  Very often people learn and mature most at work and NOT at school or university.  I would suggest you think of alternative ways to look for a job instead of replying to ads.  It NEVER worked for me.  I've been through what you are going through now.  Treat it as a problem solving exercise.  Imagine that this is a problem at work that you need to solve.  Get a job and later get your employer to sponsor you to an education.  Then you won't have to pay fees.  Don't mix with people who are failures.  Hang around with the successful ones and try to discover how they did it.  Good luck.

LOOKING FOR: Those that I don't have.

What kind of books can I read that will actually help me in life? All I got is these harry potter and lotr books. Oh and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but these arn't gona make me feel smarter. I wan't to be able to do things in this world, I wan't to make tons of money but I just feel so clueless about the real world. I've learned that I have been babied my whole life, illusions have been cast over my eyes to make me feel like this world is welcoming and that everyone has there share and that things are easy. I come in and see that things are fucking hard and now I am at a disadvantaged because I have been spoiled my whole life.

Honestly every channel on tv that has no educational purpose or does not serve to talk about current events should just be banned. Video games are completely useless too. I wasted so much of my life playing video games and being entertained by tv shows and movies. What a waste of life, I just wish I could go back into the past with the knowledge I have no and build a life that I don't have to sulk over.

the world is what you make it

best lesson i ever learned

i say stay on the grind, and don't let the workplace consume you.

the minute i stopped letting other people opinions encroach upon me, things became easier.

why not establish one of your main interests, and work towards it.

Take me for example:  i love weed.

i'm studying in university to make my future full of it

i thought to myself.. what do i want to do most in life?  Smoke weed.  SO i went out and got started.  now i'm halfway to my goal of botany, and have developed other skills along the way.

i'd say go to university if thats what you like.  thing become less vague as you get older, and university is a good place to spend those years .  its not for everyone in ever field though, so don't go to uni just to go to uni.  go to get something out of it

that tv comment is a whole nother story though

This is somthing else that worries me, my interest, my thing in life, my gift that I should take advantage of. Well I dono life likes to fuck around with me, it seems that whenever I find my thing it gets taken away from me like that. It used to be drawing, when I was a lil kid I would draw my ass off instead of taking school seriously. I made lil comic books and drew pictures for people. High school pretty much killed that with ease, instead of drawing in class I would actuatly have to focus now. Slowly my interest in drawing died down, some days I think I should take advantage of my skills by the real world has drawn me off of drawing.

In high school I was particularly good at the business courses, got 90%+ in most of them. Grade 12 came along and I had a business course. For some reason it seemed that no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the top marks that I wanted. Quickly that interest died away. I am so lost, I wish I could find somthing to be passionate about, I want to find MY thing!

Sounds like me a few years ago.  Up until I was in college, everything I had to do was easy, and eventually I got a rude awakening.  I just didn't know how to approach anything that was challenging.  It took a few years of rough times before I stopped avoiding the difficult stuff and started embracing it.

I agree with the suggestion of reading books.  You will never get to a point where you feel completely prepared to take on the tough stuff in life, but books can inspire and inform you enough to be willing to take the plunge.  I'm talking about non-fiction.  There is no book that will make life easy, but I have learned a hell of a lot from reading, and I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't read what I've read.

The thing is, in order to be good at anything, you have to suck at it for a while but do it anyway.  Don't be afraid to suck.  Here's a great article about exactly that: Are you a failure germaphobe?

And stop wishing.  Life is what it is.  Wishing is rejecting your life, rejecting yourself so you can experience a made-up fantasy world in your head where there are no challenges.  Break the habit; you are always starting again from where you are.  Things will get better, look at how you've grown already.

Ok,

Here are some books that have helped me come to terms with life and improve my skills for dealing with it:

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff - Richard Carlson

Simple techniques for preventing life's little things from annoying you.  I never realized how much energy it takes to be annoyed, and how much life improves when you don't waste your time on that stuff.

Handbook to Higher Consciousness - Ken Keyes Jr.

Keyes contends that every person's pain and frustration comes not from circumstances, but from our addictions to security, sensation and power.  He describes how the mind works and how to overcome these compulsions.

The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle

According to Tolle, most of the time our minds are wrapped up in thoughts about the past and future, which eclipse our real life, which only exists in the present.  In plain language, he teaches how to remain grounded in the present and reduce the pain associated with bad self-image and fear of the future.  His more recent book, A New Earth takes this philosophy and applies it to the broader context of human evolution.

The common thread in all these books is the view that life's difficulties aren't a result of negative circumstances, but negative reactions to those circumstances.  So you don't have to change the world around you, you just have to address the bad mental habits we all have, and preferable circumstances will follow naturally.

There is a lot of cynicism about books that may be classified as 'self-help.'  Fuck the cynics.  There is nothing easier and more useless than taking pot shots at other people.  Cynicism is poison, a crutch for people who dislike their lives.

GO BACK TO SCHOOL!

You learned that it's not easy in the real world. Especially right now so go back to school. An education will only help your life. I'm sure you can make it. Most of us do but we do learn an education earlier would help get us where we want to be, sooner.

My little sister just moved back home after the first month in collage. She's gonna learn it's not easy.

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think; I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech and freedom of choice. I'm the kind of guy likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder - "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecued ribs with the side order of gravy fries?" I WANT high cholesterol. I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal?

no offense man, but you can pull through this.  your drowning yourself in a pity pool and its not making it any easier to get out by just thinking that life fucks you and you only.  i realize that this is probably the last thing you want to hear but everyone gets fucked in life at one point or another, its how you handle it that makes the difference.  how did you not realize real life was going to be hard?  were you really that sheltered?  my teenage days were a cakewalk and i totally saw that despite being in a situation similar to yours, my parents struggled all the time when i was a little kid and i know that being an adult was not fun and games all the time.

how long have you been out of high school?  if your a pretty young person, don't worry man, i have been out for 3 years and i am just now figuring out what i want to do, and college did not help me figure it out, i found a subject i really take interest in and can talk about for days on end and i knew that's what i wanted to do.  if all your worried about in life is making a ton of money you should reconsider right now, money does not buy happiness, it just makes it easier to do the things you want to do.

if your looking for a job look for something where you are forced to be social man, be it a receptionist or waiter, do something where you are forced to talk to people.  i was extremely anti social in high school (idk if it was depression or what, i got wrapped up in MMORPGs pretty hard) and after i graduated, i got a job at a detail shop were i was talking to customers about what they needed done, i was forced to talk to them and get to know them as people.  being anti social sucks brother, i know what your going through, but you can get out of it man, meet some cool people with similar interests and get out there and experience life itself.
