Senior Police Officers Hit Out at Moves to Downgrade Killer Ecstasy [UK]

Senior police officers are urging a government advisory group to leave Ecstasy as a class A drug.

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs is meeting today to discuss whether the amphetamine should be downgraded to class B.

As part of discussions, panel members will consider a submission from the Association of Chief Police Officers, stating that transferring Ecstasy to a lower-classed drug would send out an 'unfortunate message'.

Presentations will be made from experts on how the drug, also known as MDMA, affects users.

The advisory council will then use the testimonies to assess whether Ecstasy remains as harmful as other class A drugs - such as cocaine and heroin - or whether it should be ranked instead as a class B substance alongside amphetamines and cannabis.

A final report on the drug is due to be published next year.

Even then, the decision on whether to reclassify Ecstasy will ultimately be made by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.

However the Government's top drugs adviser Professor Sir Michael Rawlins said Ecstasy could remain a class A substance, even if it is shown to be safe, because other dangerous chemicals are being mixed into the pills.

Sir Rawlins, the chairman of the advisory council, said experts would consider the risk posed by adulterated pills before deciding whether to downgrade Ecstasy to class B.

Another of the council's most senior members, Professor David Nutt, has already indicated his support for downgrading the drug.

A Home Office spokesman said: 'Ecstasy can and does kill unpredictably; there is no such thing as a 'safe dose'.

'The Government firmly believes that Ecstasy should remain a class A drug.'

A 2006 Science and Technology Committee report found drugs should be rated purely on the basis of health and social risks and not legal punishments.

The committee said police saw the classification system as of 'little importance' at present, and urged ministers to detach penalties from the harm ranking of drugs.

It said reviews of drug classifications were launched 'as knee-jerk responses to media storms' and said alcohol and tobacco should be included in the ratings system.

Ecstasy is the third most popular illegal drug in the UK, and claims about 50 lives each year.

Earlier this year North Wales Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom provoked outrage by claiming it was safer than aspirin.

As opposed to 11,500 cause by alcohol (according to 2006 statistics).

Which means that ecstasy is 230x safer than alcohol?

But you ignore the fact that alcohol use is far greater than ecstasy use. The news reports I've seen estimate 250,000 people taking ecstasy each weekend in the UK. I don't have any facts and figures but I imagine you might be looking at more than 30 million people (out of a population of 60 million) getting drunk each weekend. It would be interesting to know how many cases of fatal alcohol poisoning there are in the UK each year and compare that with the one death per 280,000 uses (assuming 250,000 users per week is correct) for ecstasy. I'm confident alcohol would come out as much the safer drug.

Yeah I'd like to see some clear statistics myself.  In any case I think that adults should  be able to make the decision for themselves without the looming threat of a criminal conviction in doing so.  It's absurd to cage people for things like this.

And you're ignoring the fact that 'ecstasy' is often adulterated and when the government say ecstasy, they mean pills.

The one downside to mdma, is the slightly neurotoxic metabolite; alpha-methyldopamine

However, we compare this to alcohols primary metabolite:

Quote:
Ethanol is not a carcinogen.[90][91] However, the first metabolic product of ethanol, acetaldehyde, is toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic.

Interesting I didn't know that or maybe just didn't want to know that!

I don't see anybody recommending alcohol be made a class A drug.  In fact we are taught socially that it is not even a drug.  Every advise booklet I've ever seen has been labeled "Drugs and alcohol" suggesting alcohol is a league of its own.

I know. Alcohol is very much a drug, and an addicting one as well.

8758 total deaths in 2006
~3 million used ecstasy in last year 3.5%
141 deaths in 2004 via ecstasy
~85 million ~ UK population
~66% is average that people drank last week = lowest average of people that drink

=~56100000 ~ people drank in the last week in the UK

= ~0.01% died from alcohol
= ~0.004% died from ecstasy

Unfortunately getting good figures all from the same year is difficult, especially if done in 15 minutes or less. Shouldn't have changed too much, tried to get them between 2004-2006

If I have calculated properly, then the results speak clearly enough for themselves

Good stats but not really comparing like with like. Most alcohol deaths are cirrhosis of the liver in middle aged to elderly alcoholics who have been drinking excessively for many decades. Most ecstasy deaths are people in their teens or 20s who drop dead on a night out. For a true comparison of risk you need to look at how many times the dead alcoholic got drunk compared to how many times the dead ecstasy user took E.

Even then I think it only makes sense to compare cases of alcohol poisoning (a tiny proportion of the total) with ecstasy deaths, because both happen very quickly as a direct result of one occurrence of intoxication. Whereas with cirrhosis of the liver the sufferer has years, probably decades during which they must know they're drinking too much and have the option to change their ways.

You realize how many people "just drop dead". A very large majority of the time it came be blamed on the user because he/she:

Drank too much water
Didn't drink enough water
Drank alcohol
combined with another drug

If you look up how many people die from adulterated pills or it just doesn't agree with their system its ridiculous how small it is.

Unfortunately it is not that easy to get stats like that with out putting alot of effort into it. I was going to use some figures on people aged 16-25 as I consider that to be generally too young for cirrhosis to really take effect but they were from early 2000.
