NC ID QUESTION
    #8943104 -

Habitat:
Cow pasture, old dung, large clusters of groups up to 10

Gills:
dark almost black

Stem:
Dark drown to tan, 1/2" to 1" thick, 4" long, hollow, black at base

Cap:
Diam is 3" to 5", color is light tan with golden nip, all parts have absorbed alot of water. Very mushy seems to have alot of damage.

Spore print color:
Black, going back to check later

Bruising:
Once again, they have soaked up so much water that this is hard to pin. The pre pick damage seems to have bruised black.

Other information:
Forgive me, I know photos are the key to ID but I have not had a digi on hand. I will try to post ASAP. I have had exp with cubes from tanks but never picked. So as I look at these caps, the texture, and the golden nips, I get strong sense that its either a cube or a look a like cube. The thing that throws me off the most is the amount of water they have soaked up. It is making my ID very hard. We have had 6 days of repeated showers, temps have been perfect, and the fields are over flowing. I have other finds but this one is my main ID foe. Once again I know its a huge turd on the table here to ask for ID with out the photos and better details. Just getting started.

Sounds like some sort of panaeolus or possibly psilocybe coprohila. Either way, chances are slim that it's active. Pan subbs, the active species that would most resemble your finds, is not known to fruit directly from dung, but as you state it is old dung, there is a very small chance that you have subbs. In that case, the print must be *jet* black. Also, subbs don't have a nipple, so probably you have something else.

Anyway, pics would be helpful indeed, as you remarked yourself. Welcome to the Shroomery btw and thanks for putting up a complete description

Welcome to the Shroomery, Paddy.

From your excellent description it sounds like a cube.  Pictures will help though.

Back in the old days mushrooms were identified without pictures all the time.  We are spoiled these days.

The cap is 3-5 inches.  It can't be P. coprophila and it more than likely isn't a Panaeolus.

:foreheadslap: cubes. Yeah, those are a possibility too, and a good one given the size of your finds. Thanks for the heads up, hongos!

We have some soggy cube pics but I don't know where they are or I'd post them.

I hope he posts some pictures so we'll have them for reference in the future.

Yeah I'm working on reclaiming my digi cam today. It's throwing me off that the stems are so dark though. I also have been looking for "still veiled caps" in the sets, but no luck so far. I could ID it easier if I found some, but these are so mature that every last one has popped. The size is amazing, and the texture is whats giving me fond memories of high school tank grown cubes. The way the cap is dimpled and golden, it's like a fried egg on the tip of the TAJ. Point being I will try to post photos thursday. Guys if it grows here in NC, now is the time to look. No just active ones but every roadside, pasture, and planter is filled with growth. The rain mixed with the temp has caused a spike in growth that I have seen in years. Thanks for evey ones help and for welcoming me to the site.

I forgot to mention the veil ring on the stems, after looking over tons of cube photos I feel strongly that other than the dark stem they match the cube photos. I wonder if the water they soaked up has led to the change in color?

That is very well possible. Also, spores, dirt and physical damage (bruising) can cause color changes.

Sorry it took so long guys, here are some bad reso pics. Dryness has soared since my last post so the color has gotten darker. I tried to capture gills, caps, and stems. Please advise on ID. Thanks for the help.

They do look like cubes, although they seem to have rotted a bit, judging by the black specks. Could you check the spore print once more or is that impossible by now?

Well I tried again last night but I think most of the little buggers had dropped. But I can promise that the spores are black. The stems or one or two have the color of white/light blue, but the rest that popped have been stained black from the spores being released. On another note, would an everclear solution aid in my IDing? I mean my past exp with extracting with that has led to a murky blue mixture from oxidation. Is there any tell tell signs as far as simple chem reaction that can preformed? You guys have been alot of help. I was shocked at the size of the groups and caps.

These pics look like dried up green gills to me.
The spore print would be green not black.

Are you sure about the spore print color?

They don't look like cubes though.
And cubes wouldn't have a black print either.

Sorry I forgot a few other points. I'm well aware of the LBM's and the danger of look a likes, but does any one know if the cubes have a deadly look a likes in my area (mid-east, NC). Also I belive the partial degradation is from the high humidity levels we saw that week. They were water logged to an unseen level. For now on I will try to hunt right after the first rain.

Well no I can not be 100% on the spore print color, only that what droppings I did get were very, very dark. As far as the green gills go, I belive that is from my bad light source in the photo. The gills are dark/black. But the water/damdage is making pin pointing hard. But as I'm trying to account for the dark stems on the majority of them I want to belive the spore are the reason. Like I said a few of the same batch still have the white/blue stems. I have more photos if there is one detail I need to show better.

What would be good points to tell the difference bewteen the green gills and the cubes? Do green gills grow in dung? And do they have the dark center spots?

Spore print. Chlorophyllum molybdites will drop a green spore print, while cubes will drop the well-known deep purple-brown print. Also, fresh collections can relatively reliably be identified of both species on macroscopic characteristics, but the ones you got here have gone too bad to make this an easy task. However, I'd sooner believe these are cubes than chlorophyllum molybdites, although I cannot be conclusive.

:congrats: Thank you.

O/T: They definitely are not cubes. I agree with Lepitoid based on the persistent ring and dark umbo.

I will try to get fresh samples today, mabey even a photo of the natural setting. Thanks for every ones help, I figured it was too good to be true. But I'll see what I can do. Atleast I'm learning more with each day. Weatherman is giving off good signals about the end of this week so mabey if the temp does not drop I will have a new batch to work with.

Thanks
