if you dont mind blowing a few hundred, there are companies that make great full spectrum led panels for marijuana as well.

That's a bane of LED's, they just don't emit intense light at distance.  I've been using LED for a bit now, not on mushrooms but testing with cannabis and some ornamentals.  A big issue with LEDs is they need to be placed real close to the organism (mushroom in this case) for the photons they emit to offer the intensity required, even for mushrooms IMO.

Has anyone grown with these lights?  I suspect they will not prove that useful unless a lot of them are used and they are close to the mushrooms, like a couple of inches away.

What is the wattage of each LED?  IMO LED has a long way to go in terms of intensity which IMO makes them not overly useful yet.

But I'm really interested in themange's and your experiments

HTH

Yea i have seen setups using led rope lights with lots of success. These are 120v 60 hz ac 7500k led's.

shroober uses them also with success, just a diff brand.

Hey themange,

I like your idea and experiment, I'm interested in your results

I don't mean LEDs need to be intense like an HID, that's too intense as you point out.

What I mean by intensity is the amount of photons reaching the mushrooms.  It's directly related to the intensity of each LED bulb itself.  IMO the inverse-square law really hits LEDs hard, much harder then a fluorescent for example.  If you placed a 7500 kelvin fluorescent next to the LEDs and kept both the same distance from the mushrooms the fluoro would provide more photons reaching the mushrooms and IMO the mushrooms under the fluoro would fare better.

LEDs are great at reducing energy cost because they are nanomater specific, when it says 7500 kelvin it means 7500 kelvin.  So you may be missing other kelvins (wavelenghts, e.g. nanomaters) which the mushroom may utilize.  This is one reason they are popular but they haven't proven overly effective in horticulture, except for the larger LEDs (say over 5 watts and 60 diodes) or those which are kept very close to the organism.

Another issue is they are non-directional without a reflector, etc.  In other words you are loosing photons because they are emitted at 360 degrees, in directions away from the the mushrooms.  This lowers the photons reaching the mushrooms even more.

And if the LEDs are in a plastic tube that will additionally reduce the intensity of the LED.

Hey all,

Cool thanks for the links, I'll check it out.  Has anyone done side by side grows with LED vs fluoro at or above 6500 K?  Or the LEDs vs. a 'daylight' fluoro at 5000-6500 K?

I have a few Vita-Lites which are fluoros above 6500 K, so-called cabin fever bulbs.  I'll try to order some of those LEDs you have and do a side by side with a control of a 'daylight' fluoro at 5000-6500 K as per standard method around here.

It's good to know other people have had success with rope LEDs.

very nice.

in the past i have always just used natural sunlight, but due to a some circumstances, things must be made confined and stealthy. this will be my first run with this closet FC, but i have high hopes for it.

I will keep notes on the rope lights and the differences in yield/size/growth patterns i see as compared to indirect sunlight.

eventually i will finish my journal to include a how-to for the FC as well as some growlogs from all the pictures ive taken over the years.

Hey TM,

Those are a scam and don't work at all for cannabis.  Cannabis action spectra is in two ranges and blue is just as important as red.  There is a complex math equation you can use to guesstimate the approximate ratio of watts from HID to watts from LED.  But all those companies are WAY over stating how much a watt of LED equals to a watt of HID.

The intensity requirements of cannabis is very high and LEDs don't emit enough PPDF to grow quality cannabis by themselves...unless you spend about $1,400 and build your own rack which would equal a 400 watt HID or so, maybe a 600 watt.  But the inverse-square law is more important here then with mushrooms, and LEDs need to be almost touching the plant matter (ie. leaf)...and thats impossible to due with a horizontal 'rack' of LEDs as the canopy is not flat, unless one uses SCROG.

Hey,

Maye this would be best via PM for cannabis-LED stuff?  Or are you asking in regards to mushrooms?

naw it was about cannabis, feel free to respond in PM, im very interested in your opinion. I don't know much about LED in regards to cannabis.

Nice!, I spawned my rye on sunday. I spawned 12 quarts into 3 big 19 x 16 x 4 plastic cat litter pans of hpoo verm and gypsum. I think i should have used smaller trays incase of contams, but i should be ok i hope... been peeking every day tho, bad habbit i guess! Hopefully ill be putting in FC this sunday or monday.

I did some G2G's too.

keep updating as you go bro!

Looks good. LED technology has come a long way.  Hopefully they're bright enough to give a great pinset. Keep us posted and let us know how they perform compared to your previous setup.

Well! Ive got porn! Seems these LED rope lights work very well after all. I decided to leave my hpoo/rye uncased and its been 7 days now since birth. I started using RR's wax paper idea on friday ( 3 days ago ) and since i started that, its seemed to really explode things!

I think that if i had started using the wax paper from the start it would have been a much better pinset.

I have 3 more cakes the same size that will be going in probably tommorow. Will def keep updated.

Hows your grow in the new FC comming along Mange?

i'm still spawning. they should be ready to fruit in the next couple days.

a couple pans had a little trouble with some bacteria, ive experienced it before when doing 4qt spawn bags, so im not surpirsed. they are just too much material for the myc to move through in a reasonable amount of time.

i think im gonna step it back to 2qts/bag again. i had 100% success when doing it that way, and that's been set back to 75%, which is unacceptable for me.

congrats on your grow:thumbup:, that myc looks nice and healthy.

keep us updated!:rastamon:
